Black color, thin head with creamy clots, sticky lace. Light hop and roasted malt aroma. Good flavor, where the smooth body wins over the roasted malt and chocolate, it has delicate tones and a great balance. Very good.
Cask handpull at Humphrey Bean JDW, Tonbridge. Very dark brown, ruby, lasting beige head. Fullish dark beer, spicy nutmeg hop. Malts are dryish and decent, about moderate, its got good choc, some dark fruit on aroma. I thought this was pretty good and I had it again before I left.

Cask conditioned - handpump - JDW Northampton A dark ruby coloured beer with a thick off-white coloured head. The aroma is fairly thinnish but there are berry fruits in there. The taste is pretty complex with berries, other fruits and Christmas spices. A bit toasty, and warming. Very nice

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2009 Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms JDW, Bristol November 2008. dark brown in colour with reddish hints and a decent tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark fruits and grassy hops. Flavour had plenty of chocolate, a spicy kick and a hoppy, dry finish. This was my favourite beer of the recent Wetherspoons festival. Very dark, semi translucent brown with a decent beige head. Lovely roasted malt aroma with an almost smoky hint and some excellent resinous grassy hops giving it really good balance. Slight liquorice and fruit too. A good smelling beer. It tastes pretty good too. Seems a little bland at first but it bursts into life at the finish. Rich nutty malt hits first, followed by an assertive bitterness from the well performing hops. Eventually it settles on fruit and toast. A really good, dry mouthfeel that keeps you gulping. Was hoping this would be decent. It’s a bit more than that. Good stuff.
Oct, 2008 JDW, Gravesend Malty and slightly sweet with a nutty touch and a lingering hop finish. A little rugged and old fashioned and very British.
