Bottle. Red and brown with a frothy head. Aromas are caramel malts and berries with some nuttiness. Soft and fruity with some pepper. Flavours are sweet toffee malts with berries. Dry, soft flavours with some Vimto character. Creamy with earthy hops. Nice and spritzy on the palate. jcr (2705) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - MAY 15, 2006
The aroma is full of malts with a slight note of alcohol that was not unpleasant. The nose also has hints of sweet caramel. The aroma is stronger than the flavor which is malty, but not overly sweet. The beer is bitter almost at the start of the sip. The palate is crisp and clean with a thin to medium body. Moderate carbonation. The pour was cloudy copper with a short, tan head. SpudClampDawg (1029) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - MAY 13, 2006
Deep garnet with a slghtly toasty, slighty perfumey nose. Subdued though, at best. Moderately bittered, caramel sweetness balances the hops. Very basic and kind of blah. Drinkable. scotty (1208) - SCOTLAND - APR 18, 2006
The Lake District seems to be bursting with small independent breweries these days (15 according to the 2006 Good Beer Guide)...I can feel a weekend of fell walking and pint quaffing coming up in the near future, well, perhaps not so much of the walking! Hawkshead Red is deep copper in colour, and has a good long lasting off-white head, leaving a bit of lace.It is malty on the nose and on the palate, but has a lightly hopped edge, with a pleasant citrus fruit to balance it. Good stuff! Booths, Keswick. For those of you who dont know, Booths carry a superb range of bottled beers, both regional British, and continental brews. Unfortunately (for those of us not lucky enough to live there) they are pretty much restricted to the North west of England, if you are visiting that area I would advise a visit.
