This batch seems to be a little different from the previous ratings. This was completely dyed by the crannberries, a red beer with a rose colored head. Must have added more cranberries, menu said 80 gallons of juice. Made it look pretty with its ample head in the 4oz draft serving. This beer benefits from the beers that came before it, lots of thick sweet barleywines. In general, the cranberry juice has drowned out the beer. Gets half way to alco-pop. All the nuances of the yeast have been covered up, tastes like stripped down beer and cranberry juice. However, next to the previous beers a light and very juice-tart beer with ample carbonation really did the trick. Had to order a second pour to help me along the way. Sometimes it benefits to be the only shrub in a forest of pines.
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear deep ruby red with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of cranberry with with a touch of yeast and not much else. Ample portion served to my 15th Annual Chicagoland Brewpub Shootout glass, displaying a hazed, rosy color, with a modest layer of off white head foam. The aroma presented a little yeast, a pleasant, fruity cranberrry presence, a touch of sweetness, tartness, with a dry nature throughout. The flavor was similar, with more expression to the cranberry, tartness that dominated any sweetness, a little less than medium body, and a very spritzy effervescence. Paired well with a nicely complex, micro green salad and complementary crunch with a pork rind slice. Possibly a little more juicy and less farmhouse, but tasty. Draft at Haymarket. Pours a faintly hazed pale yellow, not any pink to be seen. Fluffy white head. On the nose, initially there is a big hit of sulfur followed by some fruity notes and spicy yeast. Pils malt is noted, as are some light florals as well. On tasting, it is moderately sweet with a light tartness. Again the pils malt plays a big role. I think the cranberries primarily are contributing a floral fruitiness and a tart edge. Decent overall but the sulfury notes are distracting.
4 oz pour on tap at the brewpub event (Chicago, IL). Late night stop. Pours a lightly hazed straw yellow hue, light and glowing sunny essence with a decent frothy whitish head atop, dies to a small ring and laces small. Aromas are fruity esters, gentle straw and bready malts. Apple, pear, and the yeasty spice. A bit fruity and sweet for me, the cranberries don’t really show up on the nose. Light lemon, dry bread, and floral and earthy hops dry and dance. Initial is a bit more inviting than the nose. Tart and sweet berries mix up front, offering some raspberry and lemons, touches of pear and banana still stick around. Medium bodied, as gentle spicy yeast moves into play. spicy, dry earthy hops, and more dry spice into the backend. The cranberries provide an interesting berry element on the aftertaste and into the middle/finish of the beer. Overall, the base still remains true. I’m not a huge fan of Also Rises, so this wasn’t something I was looking all that forward to. However, the berries did provide an interesting element, but not as much tartness (and more of a sweetness) as I’d like. Perhaps this speaks to the base being too estery and sweet for me up front to begin with. Ok.
