4oz pour at the brewpub. Had this after 2 of the different barley wine treatments. This did not taste much differently. Missing any estery or Belgian yeast aspects. Aroma is booze barrel and strong barley wine malts. Flavor is astringent and thinned out malts. We hoping this one would be better than the other strong beers. At least it looked good. Thick head atop a thick amber body with no clarity.
On tap: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy chocolate/cocoa, dark fruit, light raisin, and a hint of vanilla. It’s a dark brown with some orange highlights and a small beige head that fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate/cocoa. There are some faint dark fruits in the middle. The finish has light vanilla, bourbon, and raisin. It’s medium-full bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Draft, pours murky brown amber highlights with off white head. Aroma is nice, whiskey, wet wood, vanilla, raisins and some oxidized wet cardboard but this is very minimal. Flavors of vanilla, coconut, wet wood, earthy and dark fruity malt notes.Some chocolate and fruity esters on the backend. Medium body, nice and chewy, bit boozy though. Draft at FoBAB. Pours a cloudy amber brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel malts, bourbon, vanilla, wood, some alcohol, smooth presentation.

Draft at Fobab 10. Pours a deep coppery color, thin head that falls off. Nose is big and sweet. Vanilla and coconut along with caramel. Pretty one dimensional, though rich. Hazy caramel with light (but barrel aged), foamy, beige head / Big, rich nose of fresh caramel, chocolate, coconut, cream, and whiskey / Full body, astringent but still lush and chewy, sweet with excellent hop balance, and a touch of heat on fine bitter finish / Flavors of fresh caramel, coconut, chocolate, coffee, grapefruit, pine, resin, vanilla and whiskey barrel / Flavors don’t quite match the great nose, or stand up to the bitterness, but still excellent. UPDATED: NOV 28, 2012 Sampler pour on tap at the ICBG FoBAB 2012 Brewers/Sponsors Dinner (Chicago, IL). Pours a bigger brooding well hazed brownish pour, murky body darkness, with some touches of orangish brown glow on the edges. A cakey tannish head atop stays well sized, laces well. Aromas are gentle dark fruit, oak, and vanilla. Raisin, plum, caramel and toast. Some toffee, gentle spice. Gentle oxidation, vinous quality, and gentle Belgian yeast, brown sugar. Initial is lots of brown sugar, oak, and vanilla. Tons of raisin, dark fruit, and wet oak. Sweeter front end, oxidation, vinous, sherry. Like a fine aged barleywine, richer dark fruit. Middle shows some awkard spice, oxidation, gentle paper and oak. Backend shows gentle warmth, vanilla, oak, caramel and toffee, some dark fruit. Richer sweet qualities. Finish is lots of vinous and dark fruit, raisin, and oak. An odd beer for sure, spice, a lot of dark fruit, spirit. The ABV level incorporates very well. But the flavors just aren’t my bag. 18 nov 2012, tap at Haymarket Pub. Brown/amber and hazy. Nose is huge alcohol, big barley wine like malt, raisins, vanilla. Full body and faintly fizzy. Big golden raisins and sharp alcohol. Really sugary. So rich, like caramel cake.
