3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
12 oz pour at the brewpub. Looks like a pissy pale lager, unfortunately. Thin body, slightly watery. The finish is heavily flavored with the promised cardamom and corriander, with some lemon peel and lighter fruity things I expect in a hefe. Perhaps my saison experience has been limited, but this seems like a hybrid between a saison and a pilsener -- the bitterness of noble hops and lightness of body you’d expect with a pilsener, but spiced like a saison. Any negative feelings I have about this beer are based on expectation of something else; good thing we don’t rate to style here at RateBeer, although it’s hard to shake the disappointment. Not funky enough or big enough to be a saison according to my expectations, but that doesn’t matter, I guess; the dry, noble hoppiness is delicious, and goes well with the low-level lemoniness and soft cardamom on top. Smells light and crisp, slightly lemony. If it had the grassiness of a pilsener, it’d be a perfect hybrid. As it is, my feelings are mixed. Seems well-made. I’ve split the difference with my score.

Sampled at Haymarket brewpub. Came in the tasting glass a clear and gold. light dingy head. Nose is a bit funky. Medium body. Flavor is earthy and sweet. Light for the style but easy drinking and rated without regard to style. Tasty. I liked it. jandd1983 (4680) - Wentzville, Missouri, USA - MAY 5, 2014
Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a light orange color with a white head. The aroma was of tart citrus fruit notes. The taste was of Belgian yeast notes with grape and citrusy fruits and a touch of grassy bitterness in the backend. Tasty.

Sample at Haymarket. Almost clear golden and light colored. An off white ring. First sniff is as it should be with those malts and yeast. Earthy and sweet nose. Grainy to start but then soft sweet malts. Yeast and earth. Light hops bring some life. A decent saison but too clean somehow. rlgk (18843) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - APR 12, 2014
