COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We recently changed this recipe to drop the smoked malt component to 5% from 8%, and like it even better than the last version. We think we’re back in real Schwarzbier territory now, especially after reading more about the dark beers of old Eastern Europe. The beer’s aroma is malty/espresso, with a hint of smoke. On the palate, malt, chocolate and espresso flavors take center stage, along with a hint of smoke. The sweet smokiness just offsets the more bitter/roasty notes, producing a smooth, rich brew. The hops provide balance, but virtually nothing to the aroma. This is the perfect beer to serve with a barbecued steak or tri-tip. It’s also excellent with just about any chocolate dessert! Tasted on 4/25/12 from a 650mL capped bomber bottle sent to me by hannont. Pours nearly black dark brown, with a thin beige head that leaves average lace. The nose is nutty with dark and milk chocolate, and a nice note of coffee. The flavor is much lighter up front, moving to the darker chocolate, cocoa nib, and coffee notes, with just a touch of nuttiness. The body is light with average carbonation and a long nutty coffee with milk and dark chocolate, and cocoa nib finish. This beer is awesome.

Bottle at home picked up at Belmont Station in Portland. Pour is deep brown with a big tan head and great lacing. Big cocoa, roasty, light marshmallows, toasted bread, caramel, grainy, and brown sugar in the aroma. Taste is roasted dark chocolate, caramelized sugars, husky, somewhat bready, brown sugar, and doughy. Medium body with soft carbonation. One of the better Schwarzbiers I’ve had.

Brown pour with an off white head. Roasted malt and slightly smoked nose. Again in the taste, sweet toasty malt and a hint of smoke in the finish. Really nice. Having this with a pizza with bacon, pulled pork and smoked sausage with a white sauce and damn it’s nice.

From bottle. Pours black with a reddish tint when held to the light. Dense creamy beige head that leaves sticky rings on the glass. Sweet chocolate coffee aroma. Chocolate and coffee flavors, sweetness balanced by the bitter. Creamy mouthfeel. Bitter finish.

Bottle directly from Heater Allen. Deep brown pour with a luxuriously rich tan head. Nose is engaging - roasted malt. Dark chocolate. A hint of peppered grass. Harmonious balance of roast malt, sweet chocolate, toasted grain flavor. Finishes dry and lightly hoppy. medium body. Perfect, buoyant carbonation. Lovely.

22 oz. bottle from Roth’s Sunnyside Market, S.Salem. $4.29 black beer, with an excellent tan head, that seems so thick and creamy. Malty chocolate milk aromas, with a subtle hazlenut back ground. Taste is of mild esspresso coffee, semi-sweet chocolate and gooey caramel. Nice. Ok on the palate..has low carbonation, which i liked. Overall a very nice easy going beer.

Bottle from Whole Foods. A: Pure black with a wispy cappuccino head. Lacing. N: Cocoa, coffee, bark dust, touch of smoke, doughiness, peppercorn, earth and leafiness, T: Sweet and bitter in medium portions and in a yin-yang balance. M: Light body, creamy carbonation, no alcohol. Falls swiftly down the throat. O: Fantastic beer. The tasty flavors of a roasty stout with the easy drinking aspect of a lager. I buy this periodically just to remind myself how good it is.
