COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We recently changed this recipe to drop the smoked malt component to 5% from 8%, and like it even better than the last version. We think we’re back in real Schwarzbier territory now, especially after reading more about the dark beers of old Eastern Europe. The beer’s aroma is malty/espresso, with a hint of smoke. On the palate, malt, chocolate and espresso flavors take center stage, along with a hint of smoke. The sweet smokiness just offsets the more bitter/roasty notes, producing a smooth, rich brew. The hops provide balance, but virtually nothing to the aroma. This is the perfect beer to serve with a barbecued steak or tri-tip. It’s also excellent with just about any chocolate dessert! (1.013 BG, 4.6%, 30 IBU, 28 SRM)

Bomber from hayduke that we had together via facebook chat. A LOT of tan foam over a dark brown beer. Plenty of amber notes at the bottom of the glass. Some earth and grain in the aroma. Flavor is gentle. Ash, earth, grain, roast, and a little chocolate.

Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours a very dark brown with a lingering beige head. Nose of chocolate, coffee, and ash. Medium body and a very smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is like the aroma, and the finish is bitter but not overly so. The roasted malts here are solid and yet the beer is mild and very easy drinking.

A steady pour produces a two-finger thick, pale brown tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a deep, chocolate brown hue that shows a ruby-brown hue, with a bit of haze, when held up to the light. The aroma is dominated by buttery diacetyl, but if you dig there is a dry, roasted, sort of coffee leaning, malt character here as well.

The beer tastes of diacetyl as well, though it is not quite as dominated as the aroma is, but it certainly lingers in the flavor. For some reason I am not as averse to this flavor as I normally am in a beer. Flavors of dry, roasted cocoa, roasted grain, toasted whole grain brown bread, some smoky malt, and, as the beer warms up, a bit of roasted, dark malt sweetness starts to come out.

Not as bad as it could be with all this diacetyl, but it is not so much that it is completely overwhelming, and I am actually enjoying this enough to finish the beer. Having said that, I would love to get a bottle of this that did not have diacetyl problems, as I was really looking forward to this beer.

Bottle in Seattle. Nice offsetting head on dark brown black body. Heavy malty aroma, a burnt edge. Smooth body, a little empty, but with lots of dark malt. Simple, pretty tasty, a burnt edge, a little plastic. I wish it had a little more punch, but flavors are solid.

Aroma’s nice, roasty. Flavor’s not as good, roasty as well, a bit metallic, a hint putrid. Good body and clean finish.

Bottle directly from Heater Allen. Deep brown pour with a luxuriously rich tan head. Nose is engaging - roasted malt. Dark chocolate. A hint of peppered grass. Harmonious balance of roast malt, sweet chocolate, toasted grain flavor. Finishes dry and lightly hoppy. medium body. Perfect, buoyant carbonation. Lovely.

red brwon pour some foam not dark enough. Aroma nutty, caramel, firm smoke. Tastes ashtray fireplace, dry oaky smoke. some astringency. this much smoke is not necessary, but it’s pugent. mouthfeel is watery.
