Backlog rating on 10-20-2012 at Fort Wayne Gathering - This bottled beer has a medium sized tan head with a short retention and virtually no lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, hops and a suggestion of fruit. The flavor is bitter hops, roasted malt, semi-sweet and also has a semi-burnt taste. This beer’s mouthfeel is light carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is easy to drink and has a lingering roasted, burnt aftertaste. THOUGHTS: Great beer. I don’t know what would make this a black pilsner as opposed to a schwarzbier, which is an already established term. In other words, it’s a great schwarzbier. The low ABV s the 22 oz. bottle an easy solo project. This is what Guinness Black Lager should have been like. It’s like a crisp porter.
TECHNICAL: Drank 3/7/2013. Bottle. Poured a dark brown cola color with bright red highlights and looks nearly black in the glass with an average, tan head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma contained light grain, coffee and roasted malt; light grassy hops; vanilla and hints of cola. The initial flavor was slightly sweet and lightly bitter and acidic; while the finish was lightly sweet and bitter. There was chocolate, roasted malt, crisp grassy hops, coffee, slight licorice, caramel malt and grain. The medium body was little creamy with fizzy carbonation and a lightly astringent finish.

Double deuce - pours dark ruby brown with beige head. Nose is roasted caramel and chocolate. Flavor adds floral hops. Better than any of the other schwarzbiers I’ve had. Watery to sticky. Light to medium sweet with slightly less bitterness. Coffee aftertaste. The flavor was roasted malts, earthy, mild fruit character, but comes off a bit thin and watery compared to other readily available schwarzbiers (ex. Dark Horse). Thanks to Bert for this awesome bottle from Maryland. Pours black, opaque with just a little light at the bottom when held to the light. 2 thin fingers of foam that fell fast to a filmy cap and ring. Soapy lace. Nose is strong with toast, roasted grains and floral hops. There’s some grass from the hops but almost no fruit except for a hint of dark fruits. Smells a lot like cola. Nose has chocolate but it’s not sweet. It has plenty of grain. There’s some caramel and molasses as ti warms. Taste is strong malt. Toasted, a little smoke, the mild chocolate cocoa powder, and walnut.The hops are floral and earthy with plenty of grass but no real fruit on the palate. Also there is not really any malt sweetness on the palate so it has a dry quality. Body is thin and a little over carbonated. Finishes with toast, roast, coffee and a moderate bitter. It was hard to want more of it because it lacked any kind of sweetness. It tasted a lot like dry cheerios. For the style it’s right on. A neutral malt character with nothing burnt, moderate roast and a bitter chocolate flavor featuring a moderate hop bitterness.
