COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Virginia’s Devils Backbone Brewing Company, with Brewmaster Jason Oliver, was a perfect partner for us to do a collaboration beer. Not only is Devils Backbone one of the most award winning breweries in the country over the last few years, but Jason hails from Heavy Seas’ home port of Baltimore. Also, Ernie Igot, Heavy Seas’ Brewmaster, is clearly a lager lover and specialist, and he and Jason had a great time conceiving and developing this special lager. It has been a privilege working with both of these gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy the result of this joint effort.

Bottle at Bomber-o-rama, Göteborg. Clear amber beer with a quite quickly disappearing beige head. Malty roasted aroma, chocolate, toffee notes, dark fruits, caramel. Malty chocolate flavor, fruity, spicy notes, biscuits, caramel, metal notes, figs, cocoa, some ash.

Bottle... Clear deep-crimson lager with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. The nose is chocolaty and grainy, accompanied by a fruity component. Medium to full-bodied and velvety with tingly carbonation. Roasty, bitte/rsweet flavor and finish. Better than expected. Thanks go out to biggsbowler for sharing this one!

Appearance: near black, with chocolate brown highlights and a short beige head; minimal lacing. Aroma: chocolate, pumpernickel, black pepper, grass, and hay. Taste: slightly roasty, with notes of toast, chocolate, rye; hops are grassy and peppery. Finish: crisp, slightly spicy and toasty. Notes: An interesting beer. Billed as a black pilsner and I totally get that from the beer. It’s got the roasty/toasty notes of a schwarzbier, but the hops are decidedly pilsnery. I liked it.

Bottle, courtesy Birgadier, thanks! Pours black with a tan head, good retention/little lace. Aroma of chocolate, lager yeast, light roast. Taste is grassy, roast, chocolate, light cream. Palate is soft, slick, light chocolate finish. Good.

I picked this up because it was a cheap risk at $4.99. The outcome is a solid schwarzbier that is pretty typical for a Heavy Seas release. It’s not exceptional but at this price point it does not have to be to meet my expectations.

Aroma / Appearance - The reddish black base and creamy white head play well against each other. Contained with the fluid base are light chocolate, mellow malts, and hops that merge into a semi-sweet texture. It might be a bit bland yet it gets the job done.

Flavor / Palate - The creamy filling of a custard donut fills the mouth with a soft texture. Playing it safe the flavors are a bit unremarkable after a few sips. Even so it has no glaring flaws. In fact it was a bit tricky to describe by the end. For a low cost bomber I’d recommend giving it a look.

A nice schwarzbier. Nothing too great, but certainly enjoyable. And worth your time if you run across it.

Oy mates, hoist yr a flagon of lager and count yer booty afore this dark lass creeps away into history. This is an excellent dark lager replete with clean roast malt stinging spicy noble hops and a tan beard that lasts forever. Bitterness comes from a combination of spicy hops and deep burnt malt earthiness. With all this flavor going on, the beer still retains a crispness that makes it a good match for any grilled fare. If only all collaboration beers were a match made in Davey Jones lockerlike this one.

So take a stout and a pilsner, then stir them together. First aroma I get earthy smoke, Caramel and Cabernet. It a mild full flavored beer with hints of chocolate, cherries and raisins. It's a smooth beer easy to drink, sweet with a bite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at an esbls tasting. Clear and dark brown. A roasty and muddy nose. The flavor is dominated by roasted notes. Some more gentle hops bring bitterness thar grows. Not bad at all.

Bomber. Poured deep brown with a short, sticky beige head. The aroma picked up toasty chocolate and rye bready malts with fresh, earthy accents.. quite nice. The flavor found similar stuff.. near-burnt black and chocolate at the core, with lesser bready notes.. herbal and earthy hop accents.. fresh, toasted dark malts and crisp, fresh bitterness on the finish. Medium-bodied and fairly bitter on the palate.. very good feel and flow.. really nice stuff.
