Milk chocolate, subtle coffee, and noble hops on the nose. Dark brown-black with a moderate, khaki head. Roasty with a hoppy snap, very balanced. Medium body, lively carbonation, and finishes very cleanly with lingering roasted chocolate and grassy, hop tones. Kinz (3786) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - APR 19, 2013
Slutfest! Black and slightly brown at the edges. Aroma is strongly floral hops. Flavor is light chocolate and floral hops. Not bad, but not really great either. Like the idea here though, hope they tweak it a bit and keep at it. pinkie (470) - New York, USA - JUN 4, 2013
Thanks to Bert for this awesome bottle from Maryland. Pours black, opaque with just a little light at the bottom when held to the light. 2 thin fingers of foam that fell fast to a filmy cap and ring. Soapy lace. Nose is strong with toast, roasted grains and floral hops. There’s some grass from the hops but almost no fruit except for a hint of dark fruits. Smells a lot like cola. Nose has chocolate but it’s not sweet. It has plenty of grain. There’s some caramel and molasses as ti warms. Taste is strong malt. Toasted, a little smoke, the mild chocolate cocoa powder, and walnut. The hops are floral and earthy with plenty of grass but no real fruit on the palate. Also there is not really any malt sweetness on the palate so it has a dry quality. Body is thin and a little over carbonated. Finishes with toast, roast, coffee and a moderate bitter. It was hard to want more of it because it lacked any kind of sweetness. It tasted a lot like dry cheerios. For the style it’s right on. A neutral malt character with nothing burnt, moderate roast and a bitter chocolate flavor featuring a moderate hop bitterness. beernovice39 (3270) - Idaho, USA - JUL 1, 2012
Bottle pours a deep dark red with a thin off white top. Scent is roasty and bready. Taste is toasted malt with earthy, woody hoppiness. NikkTwist (3200) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 17, 2012
Draft at Tattooed Mom. Poured a dark red brown. Fizzy off-white head. Burnt wheat. Dark chocolate caramel malt. More bitter dry than sweet. Good carbonation. Nice full well blended flavors. Charcoal finish. Low on alcohol but high on taste.

Pours black with a thin lt tan head. Aroma is roasty...light burnt notes...hoppy. flavor follows suit...some chocolate and caramel notes. Mouthfeel is full and the finish is roasty/caramely. This drinks more like a black IPA. emacgee (4674) - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA - JUL 27, 2012
Pours a dark garnet brown and sits black in a glass with one finger of fizzy dark tan head. Nose is kind of musty/bready, smells like a pils for sure. Grassy notes with some toasted bread and burnt popcorn. Medium bodied, bit more than I’d guess from the style. Light bitterness from the grain, slight acidity as well. Just a hint of coffee and bakers chocolate on the finish. Thorpe429 (5035) - , Illinois, USA - MAY 8, 2012
On tap at Rustico during the Devil’s Backbone NoVA launch. Served in a taster glass.
Pours a very dark brown with a thin head and a bit of lacing. The nose carries some dark malt and a bit of roast, along with some faint earthy hops. Flavor has some roast and hops, leading to a dry finish. Good body and carbonation. Interesting brew. arone12 (929) - Maryland, USA - JUN 14, 2012
Pours a darker brown color with a lighter brown foamy head. Smells of coffee. Taste is a little watery with those coffee notes. Not a bad tasting beer! TheBeerGod (6209) - Newport News, Virginia, USA - JUN 29, 2012
Bottle. Pours dark brown to near black with a short tan head. Aroma is pretty much what you’d expect from a pilsner - biscuit malt, though slightly burnt, Euro hops, light lemon, and buttery notes with some roasted malt tossed in. Taste is roasted malt, burnt biscuit, light grassy hops, and soft buttery notes. Body is medium with a dense creamy carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt, biscuit notes, light buttery notes, and soft grassy hops.
