COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Virginia’s Devils Backbone Brewing Company, with Brewmaster Jason Oliver, was a perfect partner for us to do a collaboration beer. Not only is Devils Backbone one of the most award winning breweries in the country over the last few years, but Jason hails from Heavy Seas’ home port of Baltimore. Also, Ernie Igot, Heavy Seas’ Brewmaster, is clearly a lager lover and specialist, and he and Jason had a great time conceiving and developing this special lager. It has been a privilege working with both of these gentlemen, and I hope you enjoy the result of this joint effort.

This was a very easy drinking black beer with a bit of roast and chocolate in the taste. Hops were present but it was more or less a dark malty beer. Interesting and enjoyable.

22oz bottle: pours a mostly opaque black with a small creamy off-white head. Has a fresh noble hoppy nose with a touch of roasted maltiness. Starts with decent fullness and effervescence with a light malty sweetness and a clean light piny hop flavor with some light roastiness in the finish. Pretty true to style, but nothing extraordinary.

Purchased at Hop City in Atlanta, GA; enjoyed prior to sticking it out in traffic to get from one end of the city to the other in rush hour. Appearance a very dark coffee brown with an apparent white head that rims around the glass. Aroma of light chocolate, bit of yeast, bit of nut. Taste a little thin but not bad, definite chocolate presence, moderate body with lighter carbonation. Decent stuff.

Bottle, courtesy Birgadier, thanks! Pours black with a tan head, good retention/little lace. Aroma of chocolate, lager yeast, light roast. Taste is grassy, roast, chocolate, light cream. Palate is soft, slick, light chocolate finish. Good.

Bottle at Bomber-o-rama, Göteborg. Clear amber beer with a quite quickly disappearing beige head. Malty roasted aroma, chocolate, toffee notes, dark fruits, caramel. Malty chocolate flavor, fruity, spicy notes, biscuits, caramel, metal notes, figs, cocoa, some ash.

Black with a decent brown head. Aroma is slight roasted malt, mildly burnt. Flavor is burnt coffee with a light finish. Really tastes like it’s trying to be a porter instead of a pilsner, not as good as other black lagers I’ve had. A little more body and it could have been a well rounded porter. As it is, slightly over burnt for a black lager.

Dissapointing. Beautiful black pour with a rich brown head. Bitter for bitters sake. I will not be buying this beer.

22oz bottle. Pours a very, dark brown color with a medium, frothy, beige head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, nuts, and some earthy hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, with roasted malt, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, earthy hops, and some nuts. Medium body, moderate carbonation.

Draft courtesy of James at Blowtoad, thank you sir! Very dark brown, thick beige head with hood retention. Aroma of coffee grounds and grass. Taste is similar, very roasty. Could use more hops.
