I am not a fan of black ipa, i prefer to call them dark cascadian ales, but i digress. Had this on tap at he ditch and pours jet black capped a tan 1/2" head with good retention. Nose is nice and roasty. Taste is well balanced roast, cocoa, and citrus, mostly grapefruit. One of the better dark cascadian ales i've had. justabeergeek (269) - Albany, New York, USA - MAR 8, 2012
Poured from a bottle purchased at Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, NY.
The roast and the hops balance each other our well. I’m not sure where the black IPA craze started, but I’m officially a fan (of this one in particular). There are some citrus flavors present as well as a bit of pine and resin. This is a particularly smooth example of the style. Maltajo (330) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAR 6, 2012
On Tap. Bridge View Tavern Sleepy Hollow NY.
Fantastic black pour with a thin head. Lots of flavor. Hops barly and malt (of course) with a nice balance throughout.
Go for it. swoopjones (7020) - Buffalo, New York, USA - MAR 6, 2012
draft at Cole’s, chocolatety pour, roasty notes. Roasty upfront, citrusy bitterness with chocolatety/coffee finish. One of the better black ipa’s ive had. Pretty good Patrickctenchi (6730) - Cox’s Knob, columbus, Indiana, USA - MAR 4, 2012
Black. Dark tan head. Aroma is hops, sort of a minty-bitter.
Taste is roasted, mildly hoppy. There’s a trace of mint again, a little earth, slight smoke. A very good beer. Rather like a porter.

12oz bottle pours a watery, mostly translucent black with a thin, lacing, off white head. Nose is interesting, lightly herbal, vegetal, some dark chocolate, some toasted grains, Cluster hops, some mint. Flavor is sweet, malty, light lemon, some limes, a little pine, chocolate, toast. Medium bodied, slightly sweet finish. Doesn’t have enough hop. More of a straight porter. Arayaga2 (2219) - portland, Oregon, USA - FEB 29, 2012
UPDATED: APR 3, 2012 Blackish with thin white head. Slight marshmallowy roast and spearmint in taste and aroma. Pleasant enough. $2/12oz BVery (11361) - Plymouth, Minnesota, USA - FEB 26, 2012
Tap at Beer Engine. Dark brown pour with a nice pillowy beige head. Aroma is muted citrus hops. Medium to slightly thinner palate. Taste is chocolate, slight roast, and slight hop. Enjoyable. dmac (6451) - Toms River, New Jersey, USA - FEB 24, 2012
12 oz bottle via 6pack from Spirits Toms RIver. Poured a good looking super dark brown body with a slightly smaller than average foamy light beige head with very sparse lacing. Aroma is sadly not what I had hoped for. Notes are mostly weak roasted malts, somewhere between cola and black oreo cookies, minus the creamy filling of course, with a slight hint of vegetable soup and citrus rind hops. Body is meh overall, medium bodied with softer carbonation and an almost milky mouthfeel. Flavor isn’t really any better than the aroma. Notes of wet toast, hint of milk and some odd citrus towards the end. Actually this beer is turning into a let down for me. bbbeer (877) - Massachusetts, USA - FEB 19, 2012
Very dark brown, small tan head. Aroma roasted, nutty, earthy. Medium full body with no alcohol and small carbonation. Flavor has slight up front mocha-like sweetness but ends mostly dry but not really hoppy. Roasted flavors throughout. More drinkable than would think from the first few sips. Interesting.
