Malts: 2-Row, Caramalt, Munich

Our flagship beer, Loose Cannon wins people over at first smell. The carefully cultivated interplay of Simcoe, Palisade, and Centennial creates a most fragrant IPA—its nose bursts with notes of grapefruit, herbs, and pine. Bitterness is somewhat subdued by the floral quality that pervades the taste. The color is burnished gold, and the mouthfeel is creamy. A strong malt backbone balances out the triple-hopped beer. Its nickname, Hop3, comes from the brewing process: our brewers hop Loose Cannon in the boil, the hopback, and the fermenter. It won a second place CAMRA award at the 2010 Great British Beer Festival.

Despite the advertising of the massive amount of hops in the thing, and the reviews that talk about it, I actually find this beer to be well balanced with a significant malt taste to it. Maybe it’s because it seems to contain some hops and malts that aren’t in a lot of IPAs, and is missing other standard ones. This really seems like something that’s in a bit of a different category from some of the other IPAs I drink to some degree, though t’s not that it doesn’t fit the style, it’s just a different way of approaching it. A lot of times I drink a hoppy IPA and then may want a second beer that’s a different style, whereas this I could see as a go-to beer. Very refreshing, and the malt presence isn’t too heavy at all, nor do you feel like you’re missing out on hops, they are just a bit less harsh, but still spicy. Real flavorful while still being very drinkable without much dryness (In other words, it’s not made more drinkable by being watered down, it has every bit of flavor as other IPAs if not more, it’s just a more drinkable flavor). I remember a friend taking me out for a meal in Baltimore years ago and this was on special and I had several with some crab cakes, great combo. By the way, did I mention this is a Baltimore beer? That’s a plus for me as a Baltimore kind of guy. Regular price is a bit expensive for me, but it’s on sale or in a mix pack that’s on sale, or at a gathering or whatever, often enough that it’s not unavailable, and as other beers go up in price, this seems more and more in the general ball park of the cheap craft beers (Often regularly priced $9.99/6). Would be interested in a $15-$16 twelve pack (Save a few bucks) if they could pull it off, but haven’t seen that format.

I had it on tap. It pours a hazy orange with a white head. The aroma is orange, mango, and pine. The taste is the same. As it warms, the alcohol becomes more pronounced. This is tasty. There's a lot of fresh fruit and hop flavor.

Aroma a lúpulo, herbal, pino. Anaranjada, consistentemente turbia. Espuma duradera. En boca delicadamente lupulada, de amargor contenido. Frutal, maracuyá, piña. Bastante seca, algo picante. Amargor creciente hasta el final para una IPA sabrosa.

12 oz. can. Mild scents of hops and malt and yeast. Pours a cloudy brown orange with a white head. Balanced tastes of sweet carmel and cokies with a slight bite at the brief finish. Pretty drinkable. Not too distinctive.

From notes. Had this on draft at Chick’s Oyster Bar in Virginia Beach on May 24. The pour is a darker golden orange with a thin ring of light off white head and a few spots of soapy lace as it falls. It’s interesting. The aroma is pretty good. There is a strong citrus and bitterness up front before the strong malts kick in. There is a light alcohol on the nose, and a little bit of bitter rind. The flavor is where it falls apart. It’s got a really sharp alcohol happening. It’s enormously bitter, and then fades into something almost sweet. The hop and pine resin just doesn’t work and the sweetness of the malts is a mess. The mouth feel is watery, yet a little thick with a sharper carbonation and a lingering bitter alcohol on the finish. This one definitely is not for me.

From a growler into a pint glass. Fantastic tropical aroma. Light body. frothy white head and lacing. Taste is straight up tropical fruit. Mango, pineapple, lots of the good stuff. Yum! sure to buy this again if it’s fresh.
