Malts: 2-Row, Caramalt, Munich

Our flagship beer, Loose Cannon wins people over at first smell. The carefully cultivated interplay of Simcoe, Palisade, and Centennial creates a most fragrant IPAits nose bursts with notes of grapefruit, herbs, and pine. Bitterness is somewhat subdued by the floral quality that pervades the taste. The color is burnished gold, and the mouthfeel is creamy. A strong malt backbone balances out the triple-hopped beer. Its nickname, Hop3, comes from the brewing process: our brewers hop Loose Cannon in the boil, the hopback, and the fermenter. It won a second place CAMRA award at the 2010 Great British Beer Festival.

Despite the advertising of the massive amount of hops in the thing, and the reviews that talk about it, I actually find this beer to be well balanced with a significant malt taste to it. Maybe its because it seems to contain some hops and malts that arent in a lot of IPAs, and is missing other standard ones. This really seems like something thats in a bit of a different category from some of the other IPAs I drink to some degree, though ts not that it doesnt fit the style, its just a different way of approaching it. A lot of times I drink a hoppy IPA and then may want a second beer thats a different style, whereas this I could see as a go-to beer. Very refreshing, and the malt presence isnt too heavy at all, nor do you feel like youre missing out on hops, they are just a bit less harsh, but still spicy. Real flavorful while still being very drinkable without much dryness (In other words, its not made more drinkable by being watered down, it has every bit of flavor as other IPAs if not more, its just a more drinkable flavor). I remember a friend taking me out for a meal in Baltimore years ago and this was on special and I had several with some crab cakes, great combo. By the way, did I mention this is a Baltimore beer? Thats a plus for me as a Baltimore kind of guy. Regular price is a bit expensive for me, but its on sale or in a mix pack thats on sale, or at a gathering or whatever, often enough that its not unavailable, and as other beers go up in price, this seems more and more in the general ball park of the cheap craft beers (Often regularly priced $9.99/6). Would be interested in a $15-$16 twelve pack (Save a few bucks) if they could pull it off, but havent seen that format.

Tap at Js. Clearish gold with little to no head. Light tropical nose, caramel and malt. Clean and well-balanced, but slightly syrupy with a honey and caramel like mouthfeel. Low carbonation with a soft mouthfeel. A tad boozy on the finish.

Aroma is fruity, tropical fruit, malt, citrus, pine, bready. Appearance is amber golden, off white head, mostly clear. Taste is bready, malt, pine, citrus, tropical fruit, really really malty. Mouthfeel is medium body, light crisp carbonation, bready sweet malt aftertaste. Overall, eh. Way too malty.

Pours medium orange with a one finger white head with nice lacing. Aroma of citrus, pine, herbal hops, grassy hops, light bready malts, floral hops, and light sweet malts. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, moderately bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty, well balanced IPA.

On tap at the hotel bar with dinner, pre-gaming before the BNA Party last week. Mostly clear light golden color with a decent bubbly white head. Earthy citrus and pine hop aroma and flavor with a solid bready light caramel maltiness to counter. Decent but old school feeling ipa.

Bottle. It poured an orange gold color with a white head. The aroma was floral, citrus and malt with grapefruit, orange and caramel flavors. Very nice.
