Malts: 2-Row, Caramalt, Munich

Our flagship beer, Loose Cannon wins people over at first smell. The carefully cultivated interplay of Simcoe, Palisade, and Centennial creates a most fragrant IPA—its nose bursts with notes of grapefruit, herbs, and pine. Bitterness is somewhat subdued by the floral quality that pervades the taste. The color is burnished gold, and the mouthfeel is creamy. A strong malt backbone balances out the triple-hopped beer. Its nickname, Hop3, comes from the brewing process: our brewers hop Loose Cannon in the boil, the hopback, and the fermenter. It won a second place CAMRA award at the 2010 Great British Beer Festival.

UPDATED: AUG 9, 2009 Pours a clear amber with thick white head that sticks to the glass. Very floral type hops, very little citrus, lots of pine, and a little resin. Taste is very similar, but comes together horribly. Slick mouthfeel with long lasting floral hops taste after. Not impressed with this. Rerate: I don’t remember who sent this to me as an extra, but I remember being a little irked because I had already rated it, have it readily available, and didn’t really like it the first time around. Well, now I am very glad they sent it, because I must have had a bad bottle before. This is not the best IPA I have had, but definitely very solid. Pours a slightly hazy clear orange with thick white head, lots of lacing. Aroma mostly of citrus hops, slight floral, slight grass, pine, and bit of spice. Flavor matches well and DOES come together nicely. Very solid. Thanks to whoever sent this as a bonus to me, because I would have likely never tried this again!

12 oz. can. Mild scents of hops and malt and yeast. Pours a cloudy brown orange with a white head. Balanced tastes of sweet carmel and cokies with a slight bite at the brief finish. Pretty drinkable. Not too distinctive.

From notes. Had this on draft at Chick’s Oyster Bar in Virginia Beach on May 24. The pour is a darker golden orange with a thin ring of light off white head and a few spots of soapy lace as it falls. It’s interesting. The aroma is pretty good. There is a strong citrus and bitterness up front before the strong malts kick in. There is a light alcohol on the nose, and a little bit of bitter rind. The flavor is where it falls apart. It’s got a really sharp alcohol happening. It’s enormously bitter, and then fades into something almost sweet. The hop and pine resin just doesn’t work and the sweetness of the malts is a mess. The mouth feel is watery, yet a little thick with a sharper carbonation and a lingering bitter alcohol on the finish. This one definitely is not for me.

From a growler into a pint glass. Fantastic tropical aroma. Light body. frothy white head and lacing. Taste is straight up tropical fruit. Mango, pineapple, lots of the good stuff. Yum! sure to buy this again if it’s fresh.

On draft in DC. Aroma of tropical and citrus fruit. Some piney notes. A little malt comes thru. Caramel? Appearance is a clear orange with off white head. So-so head retention. Nice lacing Flavor is tropical fruit. Mango. Passionfruit. Some citrus notes. Moderate bitterness but lots of hop flavor. Fruit lingers in aftertaste Mouthfeel - good carbonation. Dry finish. Very nice. Overall - a great example of what IPA should be. Not too bitter but has lots of hop flavor. Wish aroma was stronger. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
