On tap. Hazy deep red with a small off-white head. Aroma and flavor of bourbon, fig, vanilla, oak, and caramel. Finish is warming and sweet. Low carbonation. jackl (8013) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JAN 26, 2014
Keg @ Sedona. Deep amber with a tight off-white head. The nose is strong woody bourbon. Caramel, vanilla. Moderately hot and spicy flavors. Roasted nuts, toffee. Red apple skin. Hot finish. Full body, soft carbonation. Pretty solid. neuromatt (1225) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 4, 2014
22 oz bottle courtesy of Dan, served in a stem glass. Pours clear mahogany with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves no lace. The nose has notes of molasses, caramel, smoke, oak, and subtle fruit. The flavour is fairly sweet with brown sugar, oak, vanilla and chocolate, along with roasty malts and toasted oak notes. The finish is long and toasty with vanilla and brown sugar. On the palate, it is medium-full in body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a decent barley wine with nice barrel notes. 2014-01-04 Maarten1993 (1226) - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - DEC 22, 2013
UPDATED: DEC 23, 2013 Drank with Thijs 22-12-13. Dark copper color. Small head. Hints of barrel aged, nice. Also present alcohol. Sweet start, bitter finish. Nice beer. Okay, but not too rich. harrymel (1551) - Spokane, Washington, USA - DEC 17, 2013
Moving on from the virgin version, we come to the BBA version. It appears lighter in color than the first and has excellent clarity of a toasted honey graham color. No head to speak of. The nose is not dominated by the bourbon character, and actually takes time for me to find. As it warms this character comes through a bit more, but the base still stands: cocoa, english toffee malts. Simple and satisfying.
The flavor is more bourbon infused than the nose. There is a substantial bourbon flavor, but sans boozy tones. Nice toffee and caramel flavors with a little smidge of prunes in the finish. Nice flavor with medium body and light carb.
A nice beer, but to be honest, if this was more than 10% the cost of the original, I would likely pass it up for the original.

22 oz bottle. Part of a tasting 11/24/2013 at Fraserís Pub in Ann Arbor. The pour is a reddish-brown with a thin filmy head and minimal lace. Whoa, the nose on this is pretty much of bourbon. Itís incredibly boozy. There is a hint of caramel on the front, and the bourbon drowns the rest out. The flavor begins with a promise, showing a little roastiness, some light caramel, and then BAM, all bourbon again. There are times where the complexity of the barleywine tries to poke through, but it just os overwhelmed. The mouth feel is pretty solid, and leaves a great coating on the tongue. Just wish it was a bit less boozy novice101 (308) - - NOV 22, 2013
Not overly impressed by this beer, it starts out with a lot of vanilla and bourbon notes and then goes to a fairly hoppy but well balance barley wine. I was expecting a bit more, aged for a year had the 2012. xShanex (60) - Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 12, 2013
Bomber, pours rust. Heavy bourbon on the nose. Decent flavor but not well balanced. Could use age. Have another? Eh, let it age...

22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage. Pours slightly cloudy deep ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, toast, toffee, vanilla, oak, clove, bourbon, brown sugar, and light booze. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, raisin, brown bread, vanilla, toast, toffee, clove, oak, bourbon, brown sugar, light chocolate, and toasted earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, brown bread, raisin, vanilla, toast, toffee, clove, oak, bourbon, brown sugar, light chocolate, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible balance and complexity of dark malt and barrel flavors; with a fantastic malt/barrel balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately creamy, slick, and lightly syrupy moutfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic BA Barleywine! All around awesome complexity and balance of malt and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering. dphoxie (120) - North Carolina, USA - OCT 26, 2013
Picked up the last 2012 bottle sitting in a hidden corner of my favorite bottle shop this AM. After I chilled it I poured into a dimpled mug (donít judge me). The aroma has delightful vanilla sweet notes. Taste follows. Not a lot to disagree with here. Just some good barleywine. It took me a while to learn to appreciate an aged barleywine. Malts are not something I appreciated early in my craft beer experience. But this is delicious. Iíll look for the next generations and stock up my cellar. An excellent aged brew.
