I’m not a huge fan of bourbon flavored beer so this one wasn’t for me but it was still made well, slight burned malt and dark fruit flavor with a whiskey finish

Not overly impressed by this beer, it starts out with a lot of vanilla and bourbon notes and then goes to a fairly hoppy but well balance barley wine. I was expecting a bit more, aged for a year had the 2012.

This poured a cloudy dark red with little foam. Aroma has a sweet caramel mixed in with some strong oak. Taste has some upfront sweet molasses with just a hint of burnt caramel. Aftertaste reveals some strong bourbon characteristics, not the least of which is the high alcohol in this brew. Definitely hot at this point. Rather enjoyable, and could definitely do with a bit of aging.

Deep ruby with no head. Malt sweetness with pomegranate and stone fruit apparent. Taste is malt, grassy hops, and a tart citrus. Very slightly oaky. Nice.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2012 Pours brown with golden edges no head. Smell: bourbon, vanilla, toffee, chocolate, cherry and there is also a buttery note.Taste: buttery toffee, chocolate, vanilla and a hint of boubon. Medium thick on the palate with a smooth boozy finish.

From tap. Bourbon and oak aroma. Sweet bourbon taste with a sligh amount of bitterness and hop flavor adding bite. Great mouthfeel.

Wow, this is all bourbon! I’m afraid it’s just overwhelmingly bourbon, lacking the complexity of a good barley wine style ale. The nose is rich with bourbon, brown sugar, and vanilla, but it lacks some key fruitiness. The flavor is very sweet and very bourbony. It’s missing the pepperiness and bite of a really good barley wine style ale. The sweetness borders on cloying, but the palate is too watery for the style to push it over the edge. Nevertheless it was fun to drink.

Pours a clear auburn, with a small, but lacy buttered-popcorn head. Nose is extremely sweet with vanilla bean, butterscotch, caramel, tobacco, and with lighter notes of earthier malts, and bourbon. The taste starts strong and sweet of butterscotch, caramel, and transitions into bourbon, and lightly toasted toffee. Body is medium, but slightly chewy toward the finish.

Picked up the last 2012 bottle sitting in a hidden corner of my favorite bottle shop this AM. After I chilled it I poured into a dimpled mug (don’t judge me). The aroma has delightful vanilla sweet notes. Taste follows. Not a lot to disagree with here. Just some good barleywine. It took me a while to learn to appreciate an aged barleywine. Malts are not something I appreciated early in my craft beer experience. But this is delicious. I’ll look for the next generations and stock up my cellar. An excellent aged brew.
