COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

After Hains Point lap. Pours dark amber, modest tan head, aroma is pleasant bready malt, hints of caramel, hints of flowery hops. Lots of sweet malt and flowery spicy hops upfront, bitterness later and on the finish. Yeah, that could be tea. Mouthfeel is confusing, a little chewy, then light. Definitely drinkable.

Draft. Has a soft malt character bready, lemon lie herb hops, traditional and not amero-styled.

12oz bottle. Clear orange copper with a lasting white head. Aroma is tea, herbal and leafy hops. Black tea flavor, pretty mild, some caramel, mildly bitter finish. Medium bodied, drinkable if not exciting.

Malty ale with a firm crispness. The malt has a slight metallic finish, but not in a negative way. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Crystal clear, old-penny-copper body under short, off-white head. Spicy aroma (like seriously peppery) over milder orange peel citrus, cut grass and caramel notes. I also find ginger and cinnamon before those sweeter malt aromas. (I don’t dislike this, but I wasn’t expecting it.) Flavor is on-par with aromas, balanced from malt to hop, but with a decidedly spiced bent. It’s rather... festive. So much so that I’d consider this a spice/herb/veg over an "English Pale Ale". Overall surprising. Would love this at the winter holidays, not as much when I was expecting the beer described above ^^ on an 85°F day in early summer. ~~~~ 12 oz. bottle, purchased "somewhere in Baltimore" (according to my wife).

commonmac (1337) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAY 26, 2016
Tap at Heavy Seas with commonshawn, rosskyle, and samadouche. Pint glass. Minimal white head. Nose is bready malts and a subtle caramel quality. There is a mild bitterness but nothing pronounced. Copper color with a little bit of golden. Taste is malt forward with very little balance. Feels like a very English effort that definitely doesn’t seem like a positive. Flavor is very muted and uninspiring. Mostly an odd sweetness that isn’t tasty. Pass.

(draft @ Baltimore/Washington International Airport - Baltimore, MD) Copper pour with a thin white head. Light malt aroma with a hint of bitter at the back. Flavor is very balanced but mild. Light malts and a hint of hops at the tail end. Not bad but not mind blowing. [3/23/16]

Great and very nice. Not so hoppy and quite refreshing in a not so cold temperature at serving.

12 oz bottle. Clear orange with a beige head. Pale, bready malts, light spice notes, light hop notes. Similar flavor. Lightly sweet to front with a bit of bitterness as well. Light-medium body. Fizzy carbonation. Okay.
