750 mL bottle. Pours a surprising dark, but light penetrable, black color with a small off white, short lived head. Also effervescent looking pour with pleasent lacing. Aroma is malty/bready with a musty sourness looming. Fruity esters of banana, citrus and pears present in the aroma along with some moderate roasted chocolate notes. Flavor was Bretty sour with some upfront sweetness. Roasted barley and chocolate to complement and mild spicy and earthy hops. Esters playing a larger role than in the aroma with big banana notes along with some more citrus, apple, pear and raison. With everything going in this beer, everything is in balance and complements one another. Finishes bone dry and slightly astringent with the high carbonation level of most saisons. Interesting and complex beer.

Foamed over as he opened it. Murky dark amber color with a good sized bubbly off white head. Aromas of raisins and sherry with a touch of cardboard. 2005 bottle thanks to Steve for sharing this rare one. Opaque dark brown pour with a huge foamy head that fades to a big ring Cool appearance. Aromas are raisins, licorice, light sour fruit, light roast and hard candy. Big raisin and dark, dried fruit taste with cherry syrup and licorice. It’s turned a bit syrupy over the years but you can tell this was a really good beer at one time. A cool one to try. UPDATED: NOV 7, 2014 [Bottle / 2005] Thanks to Sean for the chance to try this rare old brew! Black pour, no wonder it’s called "Black". Some dark brown/ruby at the edges, topped with a quite active, chunky, & foamy light-tan head for being so old. Aroma is strange... dry grains, rye, charred toast, bready yeast, cotton, old cobweb-ridden cellar floor funk, & some light oxidation. I don’t love it, but it’s already better than the "Hoppy" version of this beer. Taste has a very slight date/raisin tartness, sweet prunes, some anise, cotton, mild cardboard-y oxidation, with a little funky wood in the finish. Kind of bland overall, but not quite the trainwreck that the "Hoppy" version is at this point. Pretty "meh" overall, but glad to try this one nonetheless. 750 ml shared by a Columbus Crew member. Thanks! Pours a murky blackish hue, some lighter edges. A big frothy tannish head laces well. Aromas are lemons, lactic acid, roasty malts, some cocoa, and biscuits. Initial is lighter bodied, a substantial lemony lactic bite, with good firm roast beneath, sour fruits, roast and toast, some cocoa, biscuits, toffee. Remains light and spritzy, with a good healthy sour kick up front. Some cocoa, toffee, potential sweetness into the backend, light and dry. Pretty nice, a good contrast. Bottle shared at Paul’s Thanksgiving tasting. Pours dark brown with an off white head. Saison spicy aroma with some light roasty malts. The flavor has spicy saison yeasty notes, a light sweetness, light roast, and a sour hint. Great given its age.

Can’t remember who sent this, but huge thanks! Pours nearly black with medium sized tan head. Aroma is chocolate, roast, vineous, tart cherry. Flavor is fantastic, chocolate, cola, tart cherries, vineous, dark fruits, plums skins. Palate is medium bodied, medium to high carbonation, finished roasty with some silky tartness, very easy drinking. This was a great brew. As good if not better than both Black Ghost and SPF 8. This is one of the HW’s that was still good I think. Nice and sour fruits. Citrus fruits and dark fruit with some sweetness. Really good still.
