8 oz sample on tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. The aroma on this beer has plenty of whisky notes with some vanilla and woody hints. Mild cardboardy oxidation is also present. Really quaffable. Mostly hazy amber body with a creamy off-yellowish head. Really good lacing present. Starts a little spicy before this becomes a bit sweet and herbal with vanilla barrel character. Finishes with more rye malt spiciness. A little ethanol late. Surprisingly, this is pretty good, seeing I am not usually impressed with this brewery’s offerings.
A reddish copper ale with a thin lacing light mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light vinous notes, treacle, grapeskin, resinous hops, light whisky, very nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity caramel malt with loads of grapeskin, aniseed, banana esters, rye notes, alcohol warmth, light woody notes, very nice. On tap at Syracuse Winter Brewfest 2017. Call me a homer, but I really think Shmaltz Brewing Company of Clifton Park, New York (about 20 miles north of my house) really is one of the best and most underrated breweries in the country. They make a lot of big beers that don’t get the acclaim they deserve. A great example of that is their He’Brew Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. on Rye which is their 10% ABV rye IPA aged in rye whiskey barrels. The result is everything that’s great about an Imperial IPA combined with everything that’s great about barrel-aging.

I poured a 22oz bottle into my Shmaltz snifter. It did not have a bottling date beyond “2014 Edition” and cost $10 at the brewery ($0.45 per ounce).
Appearance: Kind of an ugly muddy brown hue though there are some pretty ruby red/mahogany highlights. Pours to a fairly large, yellowish, foamy head which laces and retains pretty well.
Smell: As soon as I creased the cap I could smell huge barrel notes of wood, vanilla and whiskey. In the glass the dark malts and rye are quite prominent with just a touch of citrus and piney hops as well.
Taste: Barrel-aging is something usually associated with stouts and other dark brews, but this shows a strong IPA can be benefited from the technique just as well. Though I’m not sure you’d know this was an IIPA from the palette as the rich malty sweetness and spiciness from the rye dominate the palette. They create for a delicious blend of fruity flavors such as cherry and pomegranate but also classy spirits of brandy and sherry. There’s a significant taste of wood and vanilla in the middle which complements the malt base perfectly. The rye lingers in the background throughout to deliver subtle – yet noticeable – spicy pings on the tongue. It finishes with a fairly strong hop bite, especially of citrus and pine. The Chinook hops are the most dominate. This is what I would consider a perfect-tasting beer.
Drinkability: I was hesitant to drink at entire bottle of He’Brew Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. on Rye alone consider it’s 10% ABV. And while the booze is noticeable in all aspects, the beer does not feel like a behemoth. The mouthfeel is soft with a noticeable thickness to the body. It’s extremely smooth going down with a gentle warmth. Everything lingers on the palate, though I would not consider it cloying. This should be approached with caution as it’s literally dangerously drinkable.
APPEARANCE - very nice amber color w/ reddish tint. Retains nice head.
NOSE - Solid deep IPA scent.
FLAVOR - Excellent blend of rye and non-floral hoppiness. It deserves the title of Craig’s Faves.

Bottle, shared with Parksy and others at the lake, May long weekend. Deep amber brown, orange highlights, quite hazy. Sweet caramel, rye, and citrus aroma. The palate presents sticky sweet malts, a bit boozy, with a citrus hoppy finish. More like a barley wine than a DIPA, but very tasty stuff. Rich, deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, fast-dying tan head. Aroma of alcohol, whiskey, oak, vanilla, pine, grain and cognac - strong as hell here. Full-bodied; Very rich whiskey, grain and alcohol flavours here with a very nice warmth, along with oak, vanilla, rye, toasted nuts and a bit of figs - deep and strong throughout. Aftertaste is complex from the barrels with a lot of vanilla and dry oak flavours, but the big taste is the hops, which are still noticeable along with the alcohol warmth. Overall, a nicely balanced and rich beer with rye flavours, a lot of oak tastes and a good sweet finish - great to try! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 08-November-2014 for US$4,25 sampled at home in Washington on 25-April-2015. Bottle from beer club. Pours a dark mahogany with a rich thick tan head. Citrus and pine aroma, same to taste along with some sweetness, maybe molasses. I'm not a hop head, tried to find the IBU content for reference the only thing I could find said 96. Actually enjoyed it more at room temperature, or maybe it was the 10% ABV working on me.

Hazy copppercolored beer with a thin, beige head.
F*ck! I’ve got sucha a cold! I’ve having a hard time to sense anything with my nose... Anyway -
Nose: Dried fruit, rye whiskey, carmel, citrus and pine.
Taste: Full, sweeet taste of caramel malt. Orange, pine and rye.
Body: Medium, smooth body with soft carbonation. Sweet finish that ends wwith a great bitterness.

Bottle to snifter. Aroma is vinous notes, fruity, whiskey, pine, citrus. Flavor was unexpectedly tart with whiskey notes and a decent hop bite for an older hoppy beer. It reminded me a lot of the collage 1 collab between hotd and deschutes. Shakeywaits (2) - - DEC 26, 2014 does not count
Picked up a growler of this. Pours like a red ale with very little head. Very potent rye, dried fruit aroma. Very rich, a bit boozy at first but balance gets better. Flavours mostly rye and caramel with hops on background.

Aroma is heavy with rye malt, citrus hops, pine hops, biscuit, and earthy notes. Taste is bitter, citrus, rye, vanilla, and bubblegum. Palate is medium bodied, fizzy, and has a pleasantly malty bitter finish. Great RyePA, and a great beer in general. Highly recommended for all IPA lovers.
