Excellent beer that understands that funk is the way to balance a big creamy, malty sweet beer. In this case the tart fruit hits away at the mellow vanilla, sweet malt and dark fruits and is just perfect. Well done.

Very nice. Pours a dark almost black mahogany color. Nose is smoke, oak and malt. Taste is full of flavor, oaky with some fruity sweetness, with slight alcohol breaking though. Finish is sweet, with a somewhat vanilla extract finish. Very very well done. Quaff Score 8 / 10

22 ounce bottle into snifter; Batch 1, bottled on 3/6/2012. Pours nearly pitch black; hazy very dark brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, fig, date, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, chocolate, rye, bourbon, vanilla, oak, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity, malty, and barrel notes. Taste of raisin, fig, date, prune, molasses, toast, toffee, caramel, dark bread, chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, vanilla, light herbal spiciness, and roasted earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, rye, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice flavor complexity and balance of fruity, malty, and barrel notes; barrel strength is just enough without being overpowering; with some slight cloying sweetness present after the finish, but not bad at all. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very slick, creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barrel blended strong ale! Great balance and complexity of fruit, malt, and barrel flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle at 16 Tons Taphouse, part of WBBF. Pours a dark brown, aroma is lacto with dried dark fruit. Body is rich and dense, finish spicy, then fruity, then boozy bourbon sweetness, raisins. Really lovely, another successful blended beer from Shmaltz.

Bottle. Pours dark with lasting tan head. Aroma is sweet candied sugar and bourbon. Flavor is everything, wow. Sweet, bourbon, malts...just really awesome. Tons of different flavors, blended together perfectly.

Draft. Purple-black, like bruised plum juice. Half a finger of dark tan head. Nose: dark, tart cherry, vanilla, oak, balsamic vinegar, green apple, subtle dark chocolate, a little maple. Phenomenal. The flavor is very different from the aroma -- more malt, more sweetness and more roast. Green apple again, vinegar, a hint of lemon, oak. More stout here as well, along with bourbon, butterscotch, vanilla and smooth milk chocolate at the finish. Vinous green oak, too. So much going on. Very complex. Tart cherries, chocolate syrup. A hint of barnyard funk and toast. Like chocolate bars left in an oak barrel. Medium body, moderate carbonation, small amount of large-bubble fizz. A bit of funky, lemony astringency. Alcohol is pretty well-hidden. Great, complex brew.

On tap at Rustico. Poured a relatively dark brown color with a tiny off-white/light-tan head. Aroma was dried fruits (plum mostly) with a slightly tart funk and a touch of rye grain. Flavor was a touch sour, with notes of port wine and sweet malts.

Bottle. Batch #1. Bottling date: 3/6/2012. Very dark, opaque brown pour with a tall, foamy tan head. Aroma is caramel, tart fruit, funky yeast, light coconut, chocolate, molasses and brown sugar. Taste is big caramel, chocolate, vanilla, tart fruit, soft yeast notes, wet oak, molasses, brown sugar, booze notes, light rye notes and dessert cake. Body is medium-full with a creamy carbonation. Soft alcohol warmth as well. Plenty of sweet stickiness throughout. Ends with more vanilla, chocolate notes, molasses, caramel, dark fruit, tart berries, yeast notes, wet oak, light coconut and more cake notes.

Tap. Pours deep, dark brown (almost black) with a trace of off-white head. Aroma is dark fruit (figs and prunes), caramel malt, earthy hops, and and light bourbon. Flavor is balanced sweet malt and dark fruit esters with faint hops; sweet finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.
