Strong aroma has a definite overtone of bourbon and whisky, plus a malty hint. Pours a rich, warm coffee brown with a thick dirty tan head. Flavor is quite sweet, a little too sweet for a beer - sorry, a point off there. It has a strong bourbon/whisky overtone and hints of malt and caramel. De trop de caramel, in fact. A good effort, but not my cup of tea - er, stein of beer. I’m glad other people liked it, though. Texture is thick and syrupy, fairly fizzy. I am drinking this, and it ain’t headed for the sink.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/18/2013. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, oak, clove, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, leather, herbal, light vanilla, light bourbon, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky yeast, dark malt, and moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, oak, clove, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, leather, herbal, light vanilla, light bourbon, and yeast/oak earthiness. Nice amount of fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, oak, clove, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, leather, herbal, light vanilla, light bourbon, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, dark malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome sweetness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and moderately creamy/acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding sour strong ale! All around fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, dark malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Thx for this great beer!

22oz bottle in a teku. Pours dark brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of sourness, some oak, darker and caramel malts, and some dark fruits. Flavor the same with the sourness just too much and too vinegary. Average texture. Interesting and might be better fresher, but right now it’s too sour and vinegar like.

Pours a nice dark blackish amber color. Aromas of dark fruits, and some other hints, maybe bourbon, maybe coffee. Flavor is a bittersweet, malty, and drinkable as hell.

22 ounce bottle - $10.49 at Lucky’s in Woodstock, Georgia.

Bottling Date: 2/18/2013.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with a tall, surging, medium tan head. While it does quickly settle, it doesn’t quite evaporate on you.

Smell: Sweetish, malty with varied, churning notes of roasted barley, caramel, baker’s chocolate, toasted bread crusts, and nuts all cut by a jutting tartish fruitiness that, when co-mingled with the sweetish tones, has a quality like a good quality balsamic vinegar. I’m on-board with this one.

Taste: Roast, caramel, and some noted nuttiness with a fair degree of sweetness, but, there’s a very quick jolt (just like in the nose, BANG, it’s there) of tart fruitiness akin to a gulp of sangria. Interspersed with an agreeable bourbon barrel quality. A little earthiness underneath it all, with a low tone of black pepper. A little late-arriving vanilla and rye. Takes on the vinegary quality on the back half and into the semi-sweet, smooth, agreeably warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: A pleasing beer and another quality release from the good folks at Shmaltz.

22 mar 2013, bottle. Black. Nose is sour, bourbon aged barley wine. Med/full body and mildly fizzy. Serious alcohol, major bourbon, moderate sour, maple syrup, red fruit. Awesome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sample @ GABF 13. Pours a clear reddish brown beer with a medium sized beige head on top. Aroma is funky, doughy and had some roasted characters. Flavour is very sour, tarty and funky. Big oak and cherries going on here. Very nice surprise, didn’t see it coming.

22oz bottle; Batch 02/1492; Bottled 2/18/2013. Deepest, darkest brown color. Aroma of funk, attic notes, large amounts of dark fruits. Scents of raisins, tart esters, sugary malt. Smells like a sweet Quad. Bold sour taste. IDK if it’s supposed to be this tart. Flavor of vinous grapes & chocolate, dark fruit, fig, dates, pureéd raisins. Finishes with flavors of dark malts syrup, tastes of chocolate, hidden hops. Sticky mouthfeel. It’s gonna take me a while to finish off this sour bottle. Overall, chocolate balsamic. (4064)

Wow. This thing is pretty awesome. Dark cola pour with fair ring of tan head. Smells hotter than the actual taste, which is surprisingly smooth despite the abv. The aging has smoothed this out quite nicely. Uber sweet molasses and tobacco and fig and grape juice notes. Maybe just a touch too fruity for my taste, but still really good. i think the 2012 was just a little better though.
