22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/18/2013. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, oak, clove, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, leather, herbal, light vanilla, light bourbon, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky yeast, dark malt, and moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, oak, clove, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, leather, herbal, light vanilla, light bourbon, and yeast/oak earthiness. Nice amount of fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, green apple, raisin, prune, caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, oak, clove, red wine, vinegar, musty funk, leather, herbal, light vanilla, light bourbon, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, dark malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome sweetness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth and moderately creamy/acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding sour strong ale! All around fantastic complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, dark malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. Surprisingly works! Nice sweetness. Some bourbony infusion. And funk on top, but in a complimentary way. This is the type of sour I like.

La bouche aigre-douce est tout aussi complète. Singulières saveurs qui fonctionnent totalement. On dirait presque une tarte à la farlouche avec levures acidifiantes. En bouche, c’est de moyenne densité avec une bulle engourdie. La finale est douce avec une cerise acidulée tellement délicieuse. Succulente bière envoyée chez moi par DuffMan. Awesome stuff. On tap at Oblivion. Nose is big pomegranate, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, molasses, and chocolate/roast. This beer is almost chewy. Thick, black, motor oil pour. Taste follows up like the aroma. Big time red/dark fruits with plenty of chocolate and bourbon, some nuts, caramel, vanilla, and a touch of alcohol. Very rich. Great stuff.

Immense oak, bourbon and merlot aroma. Thick, black color with a thin tan rim. Insanely complex flavors of aged oak, smokey bourbon and roasted rye overtones. Other subtle flavors include dates, wood, burnt sugar and roasted caramel. Overall, such an intensely complex brew with strong, dark roasted flavors and a huge alcohol burn on the end. Appearance: Pours a very dark brown, near black body with a tall, surging, medium tan head. While it does quickly settle, it doesn’t quite evaporate on you.
Smell: Sweetish, malty with varied, churning notes of roasted barley, caramel, baker’s chocolate, toasted bread crusts, and nuts all cut by a jutting tartish fruitiness that, when co-mingled with the sweetish tones, has a quality like a good quality balsamic vinegar. I’m on-board with this one.
Taste: Roast, caramel, and some noted nuttiness with a fair degree of sweetness, but, there’s a very quick jolt (just like in the nose, BANG, it’s there) of tart fruitiness akin to a gulp of sangria. Interspersed with an agreeable bourbon barrel quality. A little earthiness underneath it all, with a low tone of black pepper. A little late-arriving vanilla and rye. Takes on the vinegary quality on the back half and into the semi-sweet, smooth, agreeably warming finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation.
Overall: A pleasing beer and another quality release from the good folks at Shmaltz.
Wow. This thing is pretty awesome. Dark cola pour with fair ring of tan head. Smells hotter than the actual taste, which is surprisingly smooth despite the abv. The aging has smoothed this out quite nicely. Uber sweet molasses and tobacco and fig and grape juice notes. Dark black in color... Aroma of coffee, funk, tartness... Flavor is huge... Coffee, chocolate are extremely prevalent and balance the tartness... Amazing

Very strange, sour, almost overwhelming, but so worth it. Bottled 2/18/13, in my father-in-law’s fridge a while, sharing w/ my brother in law. Great aroma of tart fruit. Flavor is rich, complex, sour, alcohol, tart fruit, Dr. Pepper, sour, very strong start to finish.
