Draft at Pint Central. Dark brown color tan head. Aroma of vanilla bourbon and roast. Taste is sour bourbon, not pleasant.

From the bottle into a snifter: Deep dark brown with loads of tan, sticky foam. So many intense aromas: dark chocolate, leather, cherry, campfire. Slightly tart, metallic twang, bitter cocoa, bourbon. It’s a little thinner than I had expected and I’m not sure if the blend would have been more harmonious if I had gotten to it sooner. Bought on Christmas night.

A deep dark brown ale with a thin brown head. In aroma, superb mix of ground cherries, lactic acid, light leather, Brett, treacle, very nice and complex. In mouth, a nice tart fruity malt with loads of ground cherries, lactic acid, Epsom salts, light Brett, very tannic and complex. On tap at Syracuse Winter Brewfest 2017.

AROMA: Strong sour/acidic aroma with black cherry or similar fruity presence. Some funky Brettanomyces character as well. Wood is extremely faint. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Essentially opaque brown or very dark ruby/violet. Large, tan froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Overt sourness immediately with a slight cherry/dark fruit flavor. Some chocolate can be detected in the background. There’s an underlying farmhouse/funky character with a strong tartness as it finishes. I don’t detect barrel character per se, but there is a bit of an earthy flavor on the aftertaste. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body and CO2. Though hefty, it never feels sticky, chewy or cloying. There is a moderate astringent aftertaste and slight warmth in the throat. Otherwise, quite quaffable. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely one of the most ambitious, creative, and risky brews out there. Difficult to judge to style, but certainly enjoyable for what it is. 9/10

Bottle at WTWBA 2016. Dark pour with a dense head. Spice, some booze head, a little muddled but still pretty good.

650ml bottle pours a murky brown colour with a finger and a half of light brown head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is complex with dark fruits, vanilla, chocolate, lemon, and oaky wood notes with hints of whiskey. Taste is also complex with a fruity and malty sweetness, a lemon and dark fruit tartness, earthy notes and an odd dry red wine type dry finish. Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a complicated brew that is balanced and tasty. I really enjoyed this beer and hope that others do as well.

On tap at the Brick Store Pub. Cloudy brown color, with a medium, fine, tan head. The aroma is chocolate pudding, vanilla, black cherries, and maple. Sweet and malty up front, with a smooth transition to sour. Medium body, creamy and smooth mouthfeel. This is a truly unique beer, and the best sour stout I’ve tried.

MaBeer1972 (2085) - Reno, Nevada, USA - AUG 12, 2016
Bottle from W&M Wareham. Poured into a snifter. Deep chestnut brown with a nice frothy tan head. Super complex aromas and flavors. Sweet and tart cherry, vanilla oak, brown sugar, funky fruity herbal spice. Smooth texture. Sharp bitter finish. Pretty crazy stuff!
