Shmaltz Barrel Aged Release #6. A blend of 6 ales aged in 73% rye whiskey barrels and 27% in bourbon barrels. The blend consists of of 3-month Jewbelation 15, 9-month Vintage Jewbelation, 1-month Bittersweet Lenny’s RIPA, 14-month Origin, 7-month Reunion Ale ’11, and 14-month Messiah.

ngeunit1 (1555) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - AUG 29, 2012
A - Pours a dark brown-black color with a finger of frothy khaki-chocolate colored head. The head fades away fairly slowly leaving behind some lacing. S - Aroma is full of oak, vanilla, and Bourbon, with some rye, molasses, dark fruits, cherries, chocolate, and a bit of black licorice, hops, and booze. T - Starts off with sweet dark fruits with some raisin and sour cherries, with some chocolate, vanilla, and some black licorice. Through the middle, the Bourbon and oak comes through with some rye, molasses, and some more sour cherries. The finish is a mix of sour cherries and dark fruits, vanilla, oak, Bourbon, rye, with some molasses, chocolate, and a bit of booze. M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and syrupy with a warming, sweet, and lightly sour finish. D - Very drinkable. Really interesting blend. Good bold and complex flavors with just the right amount of sourness.

KajII (800) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - AUG 28, 2012
Bottle. The pour was a murky dark brown almost black with a large (2-3 finger) light brown rocky head that reduced to a thick film with a medium collar and had excellent sheeting of lacing. The aroma was of a roasted chocolate malt and a sweet doughy yeast with notes of coffee, chocolate, toffee, dark fruit (Raisons and plums), bourbon cask and a touch of vanilla. The taste was rather malty and extremely sweet with hints of chocolate and toffee from the onset with the finish having notes of coffee, a big dark fruit sweetness and a lightly noticeable bourbon alcohol presence at the end. The flavor remained on the taste buds for a nice long while with a sweet fruity espresso taste left to linger. Mouthfeel was a few shades past medium in body and oily in texture with a nice soft carbonation. Overall a very well put together brew, although I found it to be just a tad to much on the sweet side...

Pours dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of whiskey, roasted malts, vanilla, and chocolate. Sweet molasses and roasted malt flavor with subtle whiskey and vanilla. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Too sweet for me.

Aroma: The nose has sour fruits, some whiskey, wine, funky yeast, a little bit of oak, and some earth
Appearance: It is a dark brown colored beer with a lasting brown-beige head and medium-heavy lace
Flavor: It’s lead by the fruity sweetness, which is balanced by the tart and sour flavors and the light earth hop
Palate: It has a fairly soft feel, with a medium-plus body, some syrupiness, and a lightly funky finish
Overall Impression: This one turned out to be a fairly complex beer. It is fairly heavy on the sweetness, but it still has enough tart funkiness to balance out the heavy sweetness. Overall, this one isn’t something that I’d probably want to drink all that regularly, but it quite interesting and certainly well worth trying.

glennmastrange (2868) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - AUG 14, 2012
Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of toasted, dark chocolate and molasses, moderate resin for the hops, moderate musty, and well, funky for the yeast, with raisin, soy sauce, vinegar and bourbon in the background. Head is average size, between creamy and frothy, tan with a ring of slippery lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is very dak brown. flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes heavily sweet, slightly bitter and a little sour. Palate is medium to full, syrupy, with a soft carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish. A very nice mix of Belgian wildness with American Strong Ale-ness.

Very nice. Pours a dark almost black mahogany color. Nose is smoke, oak and malt. Taste is full of flavor, oaky with some fruity sweetness, with slight alcohol breaking though. Finish is sweet, with a somewhat vanilla extract finish. Very very well done. Quaff Score 8 / 10

Pours a dark brown with a tan head and aroma of fruits and bourbon. Taste is toasty, of fruits, malt, rye, and wood with bourbon notes throughout and a lingering, warming finish. Nice complex brew with alot of flavor.

Tap. The beer pours to a dark brown body with a dark tan head. Aromas of sweet sugary bourbon and rye casks, toffee, and caramel. The flavor is sweet and malty. Extreme balance. Sugars are nice to help counter the alcohol content. Super full body. Rich and coating. Alcohol was there but balanced. Rich and delicious.

UPDATED: AUG 1, 2012 22oz bottle. Batch1, bottled on 03/06/2012. Pours black, tan head. Very boozie aroma. Smells like red wine. Loads of grape juice, dark fruits, and rye whiskey. First sip is of roasted malts and molasses. Loads of booze flavor...

Holy McJeasus, that’s one fnky intense beer!

Finishes with a dark fruit character as it warms. Overall it reminds me of a roasted malt brew(stout) blended with a Quad, barrel aged. (3413)

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark brown pour with a creamy tan head. Overly sweet and boozy aroma with not much distinct that can be picked out. Flavor is pretty much the same. Way too sweet with tons of flavors that don’t really work well together. Not horrible but not for me. Way too much going on.
