COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
15 Years and the bombastic beers blossom bolder than ever. The shtick ages so beautifully as well – some favorites from the Shmaltz vault: FIGS: “And their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked; they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.” -Genesis 3:7. POMEGRANATES: In Medieval images of a unicorn hunt, the captured beast bleeds from wounds of pomegranate seeds dripping blood red juices on his milk white body. Wild and uncontrollable by nature, unicorns could be tamed only by virgins. Once tamed, the unicorn was chained to a pomegranate tree. DATES: Song of Solomon 7:6: “How beautiful and delightful you are, my Love, with all your charms! Your stature is like a date palm tree, and your breasts like its clusters. I will climb the tree and take hold of its fruit stalks.” Psalm 92:12: “The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm.” Arab proverb: It is good to know the truth, but it is better to speak of palm trees. GRAPES: “Oh, when I was a kid in show business I was poor. I used to go to orgies to eat the grapes.” -Rodney Dangerfield. Genesis Chapter 15 promises many battles but also sacred covenants. Verse 15: “You, Abraham shall be gathered into the arms of your people and pass at a ripe old age.” To the torrents and the trials, the punchlines and the pleasures. To 15 Years of Shmaltz Life – and beyond – L’Chaim! Jeremy Cowan, proprietor

Aroma is of malt, earth, and alcohol. Palate is almost chewy, one of the thickest pours I’ve had. Tastes pretty strong of alcohol, some sharp hoppiness, coffee and serious malt.

Bottle (22 oz), shared. Hazy amber with a small beige head leaving little lacing. Aroma is of candi sugar, tobacco, boozy notes, mild spiciness and vanilla. Taste is sweet and boozy with candi sugars, mild spiciness and tobacco. Medium-full body. Moderate carbonation. Tobacco finish. A bit old, but at least it’s not too harsh.

2 ounces at tasting. Bottle in 2011.Aroma: intense boozy bourbon, rye, grape, raisin. App: burgundy, minimal off white head, little lacing. Taste and palate: medium body, liquoreux, medium sweetness. Finish is mostly sweet. Overall: let’s be honest. I’ve had more than 40 pours today so this is not exactly something I want to drink. Pretty sure this is really good in a normal day. Today, it’s ok.

Trop vieille.

Large shared bottle in Atlanta. Boozy, but not objectionable for style ... And for 13.4%ABV. rich and complex. Seems at first to be a bit too sweet but further sipping soured it to be acceptably sweet. Bordering on hot.

Bottle from 2011, cellared carefully. Pours hazy red/chestnut, medium tan head, dissipates fairly quickly, some lacing. Aroma is rich, malty, vanilla, dark sugars, toffee, brown sugar, bourbon, oranges. Flavor is fully sweet, light bitter, light astringence, sweet and sticky, pine, orange, date. Lingering bitterness.

22oz bottle. Pours a clear deep orange amber color with a large off white head. The aroma is slightly toasted caramel, figs, raisins, dates, citrus, some barrel character, oak, some alcohol. Tastes of pomegranate juice, caramel, figs, raisins, dates, barrel character, berries, hints of alcohol, some chocolate, and oak. The alcohol remains mostly well hidden throughout. This is definitely on the sweet side. I always find their big beers interesting.
