2013-02-17. Dark brown body, smallish head. Sweet boozy aroma, dark malt, rye, currants and dark fruit. 7+ Flavour is similar, dry alcohol, quite bitter, especially in the finish. Dryish rye like grainy character. 7+ Smooth full bodied palate. Nice, rich, complex, just big. Enjoyed a small sample, but a whole bottle of this scares me a little. Looks like an impy stout, with a huge, brown, thick head. Unbelievable amount of charr and roast in the aroma. Some soy, dark fruit, slight pine, and molasses. Medium mouth feel, not as thick as i expected. Low carb, and a heavy, bitter finish. This is a big robust beer, but i feel the intense roast and char really make thisone dimensional. solidfunk (8964) - Washington D.C., Washington DC, USA - MAR 10, 2013
Had heard this was a bit of a mess but I actually enjoyed it. Pours syrupy black with good mocha head in the beginning. Very thick consistency. Aroma has roast malt, hops, black licorice and caramel. Booze aroma surprisingly light for style. Taste is bitter and a little sweet. Nice. TimsRatings (421) - - MAR 8, 2013
On tap from Ridgewood Wine and Beer. Dark color - almost black. Little head. Very rich (strong). Great chocolate and coffee flavor.
Will put hair on your chest (fair warning, ladies).

Draft. Black with minimal head. Burnt molasses aroma. Major alcohol burn. Definite sipping beer.

Bomber. Poured very dark brown with a rich, deep mocha head. The aroma picked up coffee, molasses, and licorice notes with wisps of smoke and some citrus and pine hoppage around.. felt warm, but not 16% warm. The flavor found burnt anise and molasses on the tip of the tongue, with bitter roast, peppery notes, and pine resin throughout.. spicy, bitter, boozy finish. Heavy-bodied with low-ish carbonation on the palate.. too bitter for my liking.. OK overall, but way too much going on. glennmastrange (2871) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - MAR 6, 2013
Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of dark chocolate and coffee, light to moderate hops and yeast of resin, dough and earth, with background notes of raisin, alcohol and metal. Head is large, frothy/creamy, light brown with fiar lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes heavily sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is full, syrupy with a soft carbonation and a sticky and mouth puckering finish. Oof! This is a powerful American Strong Ale. A little too sweet for my tastes and it’s one of the most dense beers I’ve had. You gotta drink this one slow, it lasted me a whole evening. A: Looks great. Pours thick like a milkshake. Dark brown head.
S: nice smell as well. Roasty. chocolate alcohol seems well hidden.
T: Alcohol is not well hidden at all.... There are some great notes to begin with but as the beer warms the balance gets worse and worse until the alcohol is nearly unbearable.
P: Thick like a milkshake.
Overall there are some good things to this beer but the high alcohol really sort of kills it for me. mansquito (6438) - Nueva York, New York, USA - MAR 2, 2013
Total Wine, Fairfax 650ml ($7ish): Pours a dark brown with a brownish head. Aroma is a good bit of chocolate, dark fruits like figs and stuff, liqueur (although not quite booze), fruitcake, and malts. Taste sweet, with a bit of pretzel. Hoppage is pretty minimal, but there is definitely a minor bitterness, but I feel as though the hops are adding something substantial to the taste as well. Mouth feel is sticky. Beer is gloopity gloop. Alcohol is miraculously covered in all this malt. However, it does have a warming burn towards the finish. I don’t know what I was expecting, but this is not a bad surprise. That being said, gloop isn’t really my thing when it comes to beer. JoeMcPhee (9427) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 2, 2013
Bottle from from LCBO. Deep brown- black pour with a tight brown head. The nose is lovely - rich and chewy with a heavy tarry aroma and some light spicy hoppiness as well. Bitter cocoa and some rye spiciness as well. A little bit of plumminess as well but it's malt-dominated. A touch of charriness but it's pretty nice. Peppery with a little bit of lingering bitterness. Pretty nice strong ale actually.
