THOUGHTS: Once again a wonderful beer. Best when fairly warm. Very malt forward as usual, but it got a little medicinal, but not in an entirely bad way. Will hopefully age very well. Hops are really just there to keep this from becoming a sickeningly sweet mess. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured an opaque black with a small, light brown head that mostly diminished and left barely fair lacing. The aroma had light grain; moderate roasted malts; heavy chocolate and chocolate syrup; and hints of coffee as it warmed; (I know the hops were there but I couldn’t describe them); cherry; soy sauce; dark fruit; and a fair amount of alcohol. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and acidic, lightly bitter, and alcoholic; while the finish was heavily sweet, lightly bitter and acidic, and alcoholic with an average on flavor and long on alcohol finish. There was chocolate syrupy, soy sauce, Robitussin, cherry cough drips, roasted malt, dark fruit, alcohol, slight citrus and pine hops, and coffee syrup. The full body was slightly syrupy but more oily and sticky on the lips with soft but very tingly (especially for the high ABV) carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish.

Bottle thanks to artmcd8. Poured blackish with tan head. Slightly hop aroma with some sweetness. Kind of smooth sweet malty hop taste. Just a jumble.

650ml bottle. Pitch black body, small chocolate head with good retention, but not a lot of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, licorice, dried fruits, vanilla. Taste of cough syrup, roasted malt, coffee, licorice, alcohol, figs, vinegar. Sticky and oily. A heavy bomb.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color ale with a medium foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of deep caramelized sugar notes with light dried fruit and alcohol ester. Taste is also dominated by caramelized sugar with overly sweet notes and some alcohol warming notes. Body is quite full with motor oil consistency and alcohol is indeed a bit too straightforward. Too sweet with too much alcohol being perceptible.

Bottle. Pours with the color and dexterity of a slight flat soda, super-dark mahogany, with an initial fizzle that fades relatively quickly. The aroma exercises the olfactory senses to the maximum extent -- rich with varnish, dark fruit and cooked sugar. The first sip of this is daunting and intimidating -- super rich and clearly high gravity. The alcohol is downright burning. There’s a stark blend of molasses, pomegranate, musty old red grapes ... Definitely not for the faint of heart, and not the best choice for a hot afternoon. Better suited for a winter fireside and some acidic, hard cheese. (#5043, 5/30/2013)

22oz bottle, deep black color, with a pillowy tan head, nice strong alcoholic cereal maltiness nose, with some muesli cereal, granola bar, chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate cake, chocolate praline, chocolate soft oat cookie accents, with some coffee, molasses, nestle quick chocolate syrup, chocolate bran muffin notes in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate, with a strong syrupy, warmth, soft chocolate cookie dough, roasted, toasted, black, wheat, caramel, chocolate, pale cerealic maltiness character, with some dark bitter chocolate, bran chocolate muffin, coffeeish, burnt molasses, chocolate syrup, burnt fruitcake flavours, leading towards a warming molasses, chocolatey, coffee, sweet grainy roasted, black malty, roasty subtle lingering hop bitterness finish.

I don’t know man, I am a huge fan of this brewer but the raising of the abv and just producing another thicker and syrupier malt bomb version each year is getting kind of old. Thin head of brown bubbles with moderate retention. Loads of dark malts, sweet molasses, sea water and caramel. Color is a very dark brown. Hot flavor and mouthfeel that warms, no burns as it goes down. Pretty serious contender as a replacement for Nyquil. Loads of syrupy sweet malts, dark roasted grains and molasses. Hopefully this will kick my ass and allow me to sleep for more than 4 hours post a 3+ week business trip to India. Don’t recommend it to anyone. Especially in May! Hotter than hell there, just like this beer. Finishes sweet and malty and is kind of flat in the mouth. Not surprising! As I said before, this line is getting "older" each year!

Poured into a perfect pint. This is the 11.8% version made for Ohio and other states with equally asinine laws. 4.0 A: Dark brown/black color. Two and a half fingers of frothy light brown head. Retention is good for the ABV, especially the last half finger that sticks around for quite some time. A short ring of lacing is left. 5.0 S: This smells wonderful! Deep, deep flavors with a richness that you can only get from a beer jammed packed with malt. Supple roastiness, tons and tons of chocolate, molasses, generic dark fruitiness, caramel, coffee, and toffee. Quite potent, but all the aromas join together seemlessly to make a great experience for the nose. Earthy hop notes with some citrus underneath. Booze is well hidden. Can’t say enough about this nose. Just great. 4.5 T: The complexity and depth of flavor is also found in the taste. While the nose smelled more or less like an imperial stout, the taste incorporates more old ale flavors. Moderate supple roast, lots of caramel, raisin, tobacco, toffee, plum, and molasses. Sweet, but not overly sweet with a light sugary component. Hops are secondary to the malts, which is great since I can’t picture this any other way. Earthy, citrusy, and a bit spicy. A bit boozy, but not bad. 4.5. M: Heavy body. Thick, creamy mouthfeel without being too syruppy or chewy. Good moderate carbonation. Light warming on finish. 4.0 D: Great brew. No complaints. Easily the best Jewbelation yet. EDIT: I recently had the 16% version and it doesn’t compare to the 11.8% version. The 16% has a formitable booziness that covers up a lot of the great flavors found in the lighter version. I’d give the 16% version a 3.2 score overall. Serving type: bottle 10-25-2012 02:08:38

Portion of a 22 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. A: Pours a very dark brown color - one would think it was an imperial stout given the look. The head is a one finger mocha shade. I’m really impressed how well it retains itself for 16%, too. Not much lacing, as expected. S: There is a lot of chocolate, licorice, and plum qualities exhibited on the nose. In general it’s a fruity aroma, perhaps a bit weak (due to the fact I served it relatively cold) yet not remotely boozy. T: The initial flavor is very plummy. Strong dark fruits and chocolate go into the midtaste, and it finishes with a bit of spicy hoppiness and booze. I’m amazed how boozy this isn’t - blindfold me and I’d swear it was around the 9-10% range. Rather, it’s the sweetness that becomes a problem. After 10 oz. this one got too cloying for me. M: It isn’t as thick as one would expect, but it certainly lingers on the palate in sweet, syrupy fashion. While I can complain about all the sweetness, I can NOT complain about the prevalence of alcohol; the person I was drinking it with claimed he could honest-to-god chug it. O: Sure, it gets too cloying after half a bottle. Sure, it’s devoid of sophistication, refinement, and elegance. But when you consider that this is an extreme beer that’s drinkable, non-boozy, AND inexpensive (for what it is), all those problems kind of fly out the window. I wouldn’t have regretted buying a second bottle of this to age for a year of two, either. This one is best shared with 2-3 people.
