Rich black with a viscous brown head. Complex aromas of dark chocolate cake, raisins, plums, fruit cake, and sweet booze. Harsh roast and burnt flavors cover hints of caramel and toffee among other things. Finishes surprisingly dry with lingering burnt flavors.
Great aromatics but the burnt/roasted characteristics dominate any other flavors that are at work. These harsh flavors might fade with some cellaring.

Pours a very dark brown, unexpectedly given the style, with a short, caramel-colored head. Ample caramel and chocolate aromas. Strong, sticky, and rich on the palate. Chocolate and caramel come like they’re being squirted out of a syrup bottle. Extraordinarily rich. The alcohol, while not offensive, is evident. Raisin and sorghum are also noted.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle. This is the 16% abv version.
Aroma is rich and chocolate forward with some light dark caramel, toffee and burnt sugar. Light molasses and roast notes. Some light tobacco and leather notes. Light raisin and dark fruit notes. Some medium alcohol notes. Some light rye notes.
Pours black with a medium sized, thick, dark mocha head that’s shows average retention as it recedes to the edges where a small film lingers. No lacing and fairly long legs.
Flavor is fairly sweet and rich. Lots of chocolate but even more roast and molasses. Quite a bit of leather, ash and tobacco as well. Some light honey notes. Lots of raisin, plum, and prune. Medium alcohol notes. Medium high bitterness and a bit of astringency.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium astringency and medium alcohol warmth.
Overall, a decent beer. A great aroma, but the flavor is too bitter, ashy and astringent. The dark fruit helps, but it also clashes with the bitterness. Alcohol is very present, but it’s also not overpowering.

750 ml bottle. Pours a brown-orange hued black with a short lived beige head. Aroma is soy sauce, teriyaki and molasses. Flavor is chocolate, coffee. Finish is smokey, umami, salty. Lingering teriyaki sauce and booze. Medium to full body, weak to average carbonation.

pours unclear dark brown, red tint, with a small light beige cap offering minimal retention and lacing. lots of fragrant burnt caramel, tons of raisins, dates, madeira, bovril *TM, perfumey booze, cloying sweetness - molasses and grape juice. moderately low carbonation, medium to full body; sweet and boozy spicy finish. very unbalanced and miscellaneous.

3 or 4 year aged bottle. Pours a dark burgundian brown with no head but for a few beige bubbles. The nose is like boozy molasses with pine and grapefruit. A full body with a overly rich flavour, toffee, caramel and molasses with a candied like flavour. Grapefruit and pine hops are present without any bitterness. The finish is hot with alcohol and very. I’m surprised this is drinkable.

Shared a bottle with some friends. Poured extremely dark, nearly stark black color with some light cola notes on the edges. Aroma was lots of dark caramel, dried raisins, boozy grains. Light vanilla, rum, rum raisin. Flavor has very similar notes, lots of hot caramel notes, raisins, plums, with candi notes. Alcohol is really burning hot in this one, despite some age on it. After having this one and 17, it’s nice to see they’re dialing back on these malt,booze bombs.

Trying to take this on all by myself which should be a tough task. Poured into my tulip a very slick black with a dark sandy head. Aroma is toffee, caramel, and bitter coffee and makes me think that this is gonna barleywine ish. Flavor has immediate alcohol burn. The 16% isn’t remotely hidden and is front and center. I get a ton of burnt coffee, bitter chocolate, unpleasant astringency. This isn’t working for me at all and it gets worse as it warms.

22oz bottle pours out black topped a small ring of a head. Nose is sweet malts rich chocolate some burnt caramel. Taste is more of the sweet malts some roast.

650ml bottle. In the cellar since 2012. Alright he we go. Buckle up. Pours black with a thin dark mocha coloured head. On the nose, it smells glorious. Cocoa, raisin, dark rum, light cherry cola, alcohol, sponge toffee, caramel...basically anything that contains concentrated sugars, however it smells HUGE, and awfully delicious. And guess what? It’s sweet. Very sweet, and palate coating with some booziness right out of the gates, dark rum notes, kirsch, dates, molasses, and black licorice that leads into light ash and dark chocolate that are basicially just added to the same profile from the beginning with a light woody note in the mild bitter finish. The flavour profile is great, but this is just too damn sweet. I’ve had five sips, and my brain is already glassy. 650ml’s of this would put me on the floor, and destroy any hope of going to work tomorrow. A beast, but too much of a beast.
