Boozyness and sweet caramel/malts in the nose. A little bit of banana and woody notes as well. Very dark and viscous pour, with virtually no head. Looks black in the glass. Taste is very syrupy, molasses comes to mind immediately. Quite interesting array of flavors, including coffee, soy sauce, red fruit and chocolate come through. Cocoa aftertaste with hop bitterness and alcohol heat. Very syrupy mouthfeel. Interesting to try.

Small sticker on bottle says 14.5%, and not 16% that’s on the actual bottle. Poured a very large amount of mocha coloured head and has a pitch black appearance. The alcohol is immediately apparent in the smell. Has toasty and nutty malt aromas and notes of vanilla and barley. Flavours are dark roasted malts, strong coffee dark roast, sweets, toffee. Alcohol is very much in your face. Very strong and bitter mouthfeel, and has a warming sensation. Almost feels like having whisky. Lively carbonation. For having so many hop and malt varieties, kind of hard to distinguish them all. Has nice flavours but very high abv and it shows.

Deep very dark brown coloured body with a large, oil slick on top, showing a touch of lighter brown head, but this is pretty much all about the oil on top and the opaque depth of deep dark brown body. Aroma of alcohol (surprise), honey, maple syrup, birch, rich malt, toffee, caramel, earth, yeast and a heavy dose of anise and deep spices. Full-bodied; Super deep and pungent malt character with a large alcohol presence (of course), tons of sweetness from the maple syrup and honey tastes and a deep soy sauce and meaty character at the end with bunches of flavours, some not showing a lot of typical beer flavours. Aftertaste shows quite a bit of bitterness from the malt, alcohol, spices, yeast and earthy sweetness, but some nice, yet pungent flavours and moderate complexity, despite the tons of alcohol around. Overall, a very pungent (as expected) beer, but showing some nice almost barley wine mixed with imperial stout or old ale flavours, showing a ton of sweetness, a good malt base and a rich alcohol bite that shows fairly well despite the high content and still easy-enough to drink for this beer, but perhaps that has something to do with the age! Good to try, if you can find it and hold onto it for a while, but I’m guessing either you cannot find it now at all or if you DO have it, it’s already fairly old! I sampled this twelve ounce (I could not drink any more than 355 mL!) bottle purchased from Ramsay Liqours in Ramsay, New Jersey on 22-February-2013 for an unknown amount of money, sampled at home in Washington on 22-April-2017, a full four+ years later after purchasing.

Pours a very dark brown, unexpectedly given the style, with a short, caramel-colored head. Ample caramel and chocolate aromas. Strong, sticky, and rich on the palate. Chocolate and caramel come like they’re being squirted out of a syrup bottle. Extraordinarily rich. The alcohol, while not offensive, is evident. Raisin and sorghum are also noted.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle. This is the 16% abv version. Aroma is rich and chocolate forward with some light dark caramel, toffee and burnt sugar. Light molasses and roast notes. Some light tobacco and leather notes. Light raisin and dark fruit notes. Some medium alcohol notes. Some light rye notes. Pours black with a medium sized, thick, dark mocha head that’s shows average retention as it recedes to the edges where a small film lingers. No lacing and fairly long legs. Flavor is fairly sweet and rich. Lots of chocolate but even more roast and molasses. Quite a bit of leather, ash and tobacco as well. Some light honey notes. Lots of raisin, plum, and prune. Medium alcohol notes. Medium high bitterness and a bit of astringency. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent beer. A great aroma, but the flavor is too bitter, ashy and astringent. The dark fruit helps, but it also clashes with the bitterness. Alcohol is very present, but it’s also not overpowering.

750 ml bottle. Pours a brown-orange hued black with a short lived beige head. Aroma is soy sauce, teriyaki and molasses. Flavor is chocolate, coffee. Finish is smokey, umami, salty. Lingering teriyaki sauce and booze. Medium to full body, weak to average carbonation.

pours unclear dark brown, red tint, with a small light beige cap offering minimal retention and lacing. lots of fragrant burnt caramel, tons of raisins, dates, madeira, bovril *TM, perfumey booze, cloying sweetness - molasses and grape juice. moderately low carbonation, medium to full body; sweet and boozy spicy finish. very unbalanced and miscellaneous.

3 or 4 year aged bottle. Pours a dark burgundian brown with no head but for a few beige bubbles. The nose is like boozy molasses with pine and grapefruit. A full body with a overly rich flavour, toffee, caramel and molasses with a candied like flavour. Grapefruit and pine hops are present without any bitterness. The finish is hot with alcohol and very. I’m surprised this is drinkable.

Shared a bottle with some friends. Poured extremely dark, nearly stark black color with some light cola notes on the edges. Aroma was lots of dark caramel, dried raisins, boozy grains. Light vanilla, rum, rum raisin. Flavor has very similar notes, lots of hot caramel notes, raisins, plums, with candi notes. Alcohol is really burning hot in this one, despite some age on it. After having this one and 17, it’s nice to see they’re dialing back on these malt, booze bombs.

Trying to take this on all by myself which should be a tough task. Poured into my tulip a very slick black with a dark sandy head. Aroma is toffee, caramel, and bitter coffee and makes me think that this is gonna barleywine ish. Flavor has immediate alcohol burn. The 16% isn’t remotely hidden and is front and center. I get a ton of burnt coffee, bitter chocolate, unpleasant astringency. This isn’t working for me at all and it gets worse as it warms.
