4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Fig, dates, burnt brown sugar with a sharp cleansing hop finish. Carbonation is perfect. The dubbel aspects are very Ommegang and the dopple adds a thick smoothness. I have not rated a beer in a while but this inspired me...as He’brew often does.
At first I didn’t know what to think of this beer. Poured about half of it in a wine glass. Had a hazy dark dark brown-slightly purple appearance. I enjoyed the 2nd half more, but there was a bit too much going on there...and I usually prefer malty beers too. Definitely a malt-fig bomb. A decent beer if looking for something different on the fruitier side, but not quite a "fruit beer". alexsdad06 (10428) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAR 22, 2015
22 oz bottle shared by ? from notes. Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have quite a bit of dark fruits, figs and dates, raisins, some Belgian candi sugar and light spices. Sweet, bready malts. Some alcohol comes through at times. About what I’ve come to expect. mfp13jr (152) - Glenville, New York, USA - MAY 20, 2014
Very sweet malty beer. Hmmmm brown gold with a loooooooooong finish. About what you would expect from Schmaltz. ads135 (4607) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - JUN 26, 2013
Not really sure I know what a date should taste like, but this beer definitely has some raisin or prune flavors. Smooth and mildly acidic at the end. AdamChandler (5052) - Enfield, New Hampshire, USA - AUG 14, 2012
Murky maroon colour. No head. Smells like figs and raisins. Some chocolate / cocoa notes as well. Taste is like candy. Some cloves and coriander. Pepper and other spices. 20% carbonation on the mouth swish.

Pours a deep burnt umber color with traces of ruby.... nice two finger off white head that dissipates quickly. Aromas are sweet malts mixed with dark fruits, raisin, plum, fig, date.... and a bit of boozy belgian candi sugars as well. On the palate Im getting a lot of dark fruits as well with a sweet toffee and a bit of burnt sugar bitterness on the finish... also lingering in the finish is a lot of medjool date flavor that complements the style well. Wishing I had a little bacon and goat cheese to pair with this one ! 7ris7an (80) - Olathe, Kansas, USA - JUN 9, 2012
Puored on tulip. It has a brown amber color but more towards a purple color it develop a massive bubbly head. The body of the beer is clear and really bubbly. The smell is intensive on the dates and lots of sweet aromas such as brown sugar and caramel. The flavor is also very strong, lots of dark fruits and the date it’s definitely the main flavor the comes out. The texture on this beer is solid and very oily. Overall an OK beer, at first I drank at a high temperature and it was strong on the flavors which made it slow to drink. 22oz. its too big for a beer brew with date concentrate reebtogi (6270) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - APR 5, 2012
650ml bottle pours an amber brownish color with decent off-white head that leaves little lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark fruits with some hints of chocolate and mild hops. Taste is malty sweet with the dark fruits and a mild hoppy bitternss. Medium body and moderate carbonation. An interesting doppelbock style beer which is recommended. superspak (5594) - Michigan, USA - APR 3, 2012
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating (some time in 2009 though). Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a fairly dense 1-2 finger light khaki head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some slight lacing on the glass. Aromas of plum, fig, date, caramel, molasses, biscuit, toasted malt, nuttiness, light chocolate, clove, and yeast spices. Some nice and well balanced aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of big prune, fig, caramel, molasses, toasted malt, biscuit, chocolate, nuttiness, clove, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, biscuit, chocolate, and light spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; with no cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a nice creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Very smooth to drink for 7.8%. Overall this is a very excellent brew from Shmaltz. Nice complexity and balance; and very smooth to sip on. I really enjoyed this one. iugrad93 (265) - Indiana, USA - MAR 22, 2012
Dark brown pour with reddish hue. Aromas of malt, bread, and raisins. Taste is sweet, light bitterness, some soy flavor. Overall, nice doppelbock though not my favorite style.
