November 7th, 2014 - Hardly a week goes by without the announcement of a brewery opening or an opening itself. Helm’s, I think, has been open for a bit, but I finally got a chance to partake in their potions, ordering a long line of tasters for an beery evening with the lady. The gentleman behind the counter recommended beginning with this: the Captain Pale Ale. The color is actually rather dark given the size of the taster glass, with a nice auburn color and cool clarity. The nose is slightly fruity with some apple, and the taste is appreciably bitter, though with some continuity with the aroma’s sweetness. The balance is solid, with a beautifully ripe grapefruit note at the end of the taste balanced against a rusty sweetness at the beginning. This is a very encouraging story for Helm’s beers, and as far as I can see, a dissenting opinion with my colleagues here on Ratebeer. JohnnyJ (5562) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 10, 2016
On draft at the brewery. Yellow pour, slightly hazy, with a white head. Very light and clean. Malty, bread, notes of citrus and fruit, and slight bitter finish. Very easy drinking, but also a bit boring pale ale. balboaraiders (4) - - JAN 27, 2016 does not count
This was my go to beer. What a pale ale should be. Really nice all the way around. Dodgers101 (6) - - JAN 21, 2016 does not count
Third beer in my flight at Helm’s. This didn’t have the aroma I thought it would, only complaint. Clarity was great, and an easy drinking beer. Lots of citrus for me. blipp (9275) - La Mesa, California, USA - NOV 16, 2015
Draft. Pours gold with a white head. Fruity hops, mild citrus, some peachy notes, moderate sweetness, and a bit of lingering bitterness. Pretty good.

Draft at Eastbound on Pint Glass Night. Typical American Pale Ale. Hops on the nose. Grass and pine. More on the flavor. Hoppy and nearing an IPA. sfbeerfan (2) - - NOV 7, 2014 does not count
Crystal clear beer with a great clean finish. A little bit of a hop bite on the back end which I think makes it a nice San Diego Pale DedicatedToFun (4000) - Santa Monica, California, USA - OCT 29, 2014
Tap, dark orange pour, white head, nose is lacking, taste is slightly hoppy, maybe some oranges but thats it AmEricanbrew (6878) - Same Trailer, Different Park, Louisiana, USA - SEP 10, 2014
Bottle. Clear amber color with a huge ivory head. Tropical fruit, plastic, caramel aromas. Frothy expansive mouthfeel. Citrusy, pine hoppy bitter flavors with polycarbonate, plastic, all forms of infection----drying bitter finish____pretty sure this bottle was compromised --too bad. 8 Mar 2014, tap at Helm's Brewing. Dark yellow, clear, no bubbles. Nose is sugary granola. Thin body and moderately fizzy. Grassy hops up front but sugary granola in the background.
