Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phloen Chit, Bangkok. Poured a hazy medium amber with a thin white head. The aroma is apple, orange citrus fruit, yeast, oaky butter Chardonnay, some light alcohol notes. The flavour is moderate to light sweet with a rich, creamy, slightly oily, fruity, vinous, light hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. UPDATED: OCT 26, 2016 Draft at Bru Craft. Pours an unusual clear yellow burnt sienna. A slim head settled nicely then completely disappeared. Remarkably heavy and still. Fragrant florals. Chardonnay. Gooseberries. Green grapes. Orange passionfruit. Coriander. Herbes de Provence. Belgium yeast. Somewhat sugary. Very slightly tart. Tannic semi-dry finish. Tap at Yellow Ape Craft 4th anniversary event. Bourbony nose, thick strong maltiness, sour fruit notes, too. Clear medium amber/yellow color. Heavy malt and bourbon initial flavor, gets tart and fruity in mid palate, quite alcoholic, and some mild hop presence in late mid palate and finish. 9.8%ABV. Belgian Strong Ale.
Tapped out deep gold. 10ºSRM.
Nose has a pleasant sour fruitiness. Smells more like an aged lambic. There is a woody, lightly sour aroma.
Mouthfeel is watery. Palate has a strong character of incense with wood, perfume and a bitter character. Sweet and fruity with apple cider coming to mind. Palate also has a good amount of that cement dust, mildew, dry wood, and light phenol with a bit of formic acid harshness. Hops are Woody, earthy.
Palate is most reminiscent of Orval.
Finish is dry, woody and white wine.
Overall, pretty pleasant, but I’d still go with the boys that’ve done this sort of thing since forever, Orval would be a good start and something rom Huyghe might be a more contemporary choice. This is good, just that there are better more experienced examples out there.
