Copper-colored and hoppy, this beer is most easily compared to a German form of a pale ale. Popular around Dusseldorf, the name means simply “old” and recalls a time before Germany made primarily lagers. This beer features a high bitterness and aroma characteristic of generous additions of hops to the brew.

Pours a clear orange. Some fruity aromas and flavours. However nothing is pronounced. Somewhat bland and watery.

On tap at brewpub. Again, not a spectacular beer by any means. Some sweetness, a touch of hops. Overall, nothing too interesting here.

Has a sweet scent of caramel, has similar toffee and malty tastes. Pretty smooth and easy to drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours clear copper with an off-white creamy head. Moderate sweet malt aroma, hint of caramel. Pronounced malt flavor. Medium body, almost creamy. No noticeable hop flavor. This is a good beer.

Tap. Deep orange amber pour with a rocky head. Aroma of caramel and some sort of funk. Pretty light palate. Taste is slight bread and malt, heavy on the metallic elements. Not too good.

On tap @ Herkimer. Fairly dark red orange appearance with an orangish tan head. Fairly hoppy, amber malty nose. Somewhat hoppy, bland amber malty flavor.

On tap at the brewpub. Light copper with an average biege head. Aroma of malt, grassy hops and caramel. Tastes of citrus, malt and hops. A touch of bitterness. Not too exciting, but drinkable.

Now, I am not a big fan of The Herkimer or their beer but I was there again and after drinking 3 glasses of water I broke down and got a beer. I guess it deserves a couple chances, right?

So I go for the Alt. Pours a reddish tan copper color with minimal head. The aroma is pretty underwhelming. Some malt notes and a touch of hops. The taste is really subpar as well. Starts with a sweetness and transitions to a somewhat bitter finish. What gets me is an offputting ending taste in the mouth after.
Medium mouthfeel.

Overall, not very good.

Shaker pint at the Brew Pub in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pour is a hazed copper ruby light brown with a smallish ecru head. Some lacing streaks the glass to the finish. Aroma of not too much initially, as it was served pretty cold. As it warmed I got some cherry fruit and toasted malt. The hops are present, and are of the grassy variety. Taste is sweet cherry fruit, with toasted malt behind it. The hops pick up in the rear, with mild grassiness. The taste overall has a weird sweetness to it, doesn’t seem quite to fit in. Palate is medium bodied, nice active carbonation and a crisp dry finish. Normally I really enjoy the Herkimer beers, but this was just ok.

Floral and malt aromas. Golden coloured a little rich on the palate and fruity with a crisp and slightly dry malt finish.
