Draft @ Brewpub: Dark mahogany, no head or lacing. Nose of light roast and plum, very dry. Flavor is dry too, a bit husky a light roast note coming through. Thin, meh. hellomynameis (876) - Mayer, Minnesota, USA - AUG 29, 2007
dark brown and red with a medium tan head. Burnt amber malt aroma. The flavor is quite sweet with amber, brown, androasted malts. chriso (7533) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 21, 2007
On tap at the brewpub, June 2007. Easily the best of the beers on offer, but the competition wasn’t too tough. Coppery mahogany colour. Plenty of firm malt throughout. The malt is more caramel than roasty. Not too sweet. Nor exactly packed with flavour, but a decent enough Dunkel

Pours a light brown/caramel with a smallish head. Aroma is grain and toast. Taste is a bit on the sweet side with caramel. The body is sticky sweet and rich. Some hop taste and my favorite of the Herkimer lineup.

Draught pint at the brewpub, RBSG weekend, June 22 2007. Clear walnut with a nice dollop of off-white creamy head and excellent ring lacing....chocolate malts strong in the aroma, hints of caramel, faint grassy hops...fresh, dry mouthfeel, burnt and toasty grassy/grainy character, light chocolate and vanilla notes, smooth and satisfying medium-dry short finish. Pretty solid example of a style I haven’t really gotten into. Dickinsonbeer (5074) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JUL 3, 2007
Pours a deep amberish brown- woody and a nice lasting tight head. Aroma is ligth roasted malts, toasty and nutty, caramel and earth. Hints of diacetyl in the flavor and aroma but is subdued and dominated by dark roasty malts and light herbal hops. Light chocolate and even a hint of char on the aftertaste. Pretty decent dunkel lager. JK (6162) - St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA - JUN 22, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 9, 2009 One of the better beers I tasted there. Dark brown color. Grain aroma. Flavor is also very grainy, like eating a handful of unprocessed grain. But this actually works for this beer, even if it isn’t as roasty as a dunkel should be.
------- Winterfest 2009. I like this even more. Lots of grain flavor with lager yeast. Full, thick palate, lots of malt and roasted character with a hint of smoke. Like something out of the Czech Republic. detroiter (958) - Euphoria, Minnesota, USA - JAN 27, 2007
Pours a little bit hazy auburn brown, topped by less than half an inch of off white foam. Brief head retention, no lacing. Chocolate malt and a little bit of roasted grain in the aroma, no yeast characteristics.
Nice flavor here, though not bold or intense. Good chocolate malt, with a mild fruitiness and a distinct toasted malt flavor which is most noticeable in the finish. Smooth, clean, and moderately carbonated. Certainly enough flavor to satisfy, yet light enough to enjoy in the summer sunshine while watching the Galactic Pizza delivery folk (clad in bright green spandex and red motorcycle helmets) ride by argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - SEP 5, 2005
Clear brown-red body with beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, chocolate, some lemon. Taste is medium sweet, nutty, caramel, some chocolate, light lemon, earthy. The chocolate becomes the dominant characteristic once it warms. Light-medium body with light acidity. Served too cold, definitely improves when it warms up.
