Clear brown-red body with beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, chocolate, some lemon. Taste is medium sweet, nutty, caramel, some chocolate, light lemon, earthy. The chocolate becomes the dominant characteristic once it warms. Light-medium body with light acidity. Served too cold, definitely improves when it warms up. UPDATED: DEC 29, 2013 TAP: at the Herkimer, 2.1.09. Pours a dark black, maybe a little red on the edges. Some toffee/malt on the nose, but the taste was not appealing. Overly dry. cubs (10693) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAR 23, 2011
On tap @ Herkimer. Dark red/brown appearance with a light tan head. Sweet brown malty nose. Slightly hoppy, somewhat nutty, brown malty lager flavor. chriso (7586) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 21, 2007
On tap at the brewpub, June 2007. Easily the best of the beers on offer, but the competition wasn’t too tough. Coppery mahogany colour. Plenty of firm malt throughout. The malt is more caramel than roasty. Not too sweet. Nor exactly packed with flavour, but a decent enough Dunkel

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2009 One of the better beers I tasted there. Dark brown color. Grain aroma. Flavor is also very grainy, like eating a handful of unprocessed grain. But this actually works for this beer, even if it isn’t as roasty as a dunkel should be.
------- Winterfest 2009. I like this even more. Lots of grain flavor with lager yeast. Full, thick palate, lots of malt and roasted character with a hint of smoke. Like something out of the Czech Republic.

Sampled at ABR 07 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pours a semi-hazy dark brown brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and white ring. Aroma of roasted multi-grain malt, some flowery hops and a touch of vanilla. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated with flavors of dark roasted caramel malt, some flowery hops, some mild fruit character and a touch of vanilla. Finish is light, semi-dry with a multigrain malt aftertaste. Probably the best sampling from Herkimer at the ABR. BückDich (5464) - McCall, Idaho, USA - OCT 5, 2007
Draft @ Brewpub: Dark mahogany, no head or lacing. Nose of light roast and plum, very dry. Flavor is dry too, a bit husky a light roast note coming through. Thin, meh. badgerben (5285) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - NOV 11, 2004
Dark brown color with no head. Malty aroma and taste. A little caramel lacing and raw barley as well. Not a great dunkel. Dickinsonbeer (5074) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JUL 3, 2007
Pours a deep amberish brown- woody and a nice lasting tight head. Aroma is ligth roasted malts, toasty and nutty, caramel and earth. Hints of diacetyl in the flavor and aroma but is subdued and dominated by dark roasty malts and light herbal hops. Light chocolate and even a hint of char on the aftertaste. Pretty decent dunkel lager. kidmartinek (5001) - austin, Texas, USA - AUG 30, 2009
Appears darl brown, cloudy, reddish tint. Holding tan head. Aroma of light nuts, pecan and almond. Flavor is mostly of a toasted malt, some coffee, a tiny bit of toffee and sugar. Mostly watery, coffee palate. Not reminiscent of a dunkel, but rather a dunkel gone scotch ale or stout. Light, carbonated mouthfeel, heavy coffee taste on the finish.
