Pours a little bit hazy auburn brown, topped by less than half an inch of off white foam. Brief head retention, no lacing. Chocolate malt and a little bit of roasted grain in the aroma, no yeast characteristics.
Nice flavor here, though not bold or intense. Good chocolate malt, with a mild fruitiness and a distinct toasted malt flavor which is most noticeable in the finish. Smooth, clean, and moderately carbonated. Certainly enough flavor to satisfy, yet light enough to enjoy in the summer sunshine while watching the Galactic Pizza delivery folk (clad in bright green spandex and red motorcycle helmets) ride by Eyedrinkale (3235) - Astoria, New York, USA - JUL 12, 2007
Pours a light brown/caramel with a smallish head. Aroma is grain and toast. Taste is a bit on the sweet side with caramel. The body is sticky sweet and rich. Some hop taste and my favorite of the Herkimer lineup. JK (6280) - St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA - JUN 22, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 9, 2009 One of the better beers I tasted there. Dark brown color. Grain aroma. Flavor is also very grainy, like eating a handful of unprocessed grain. But this actually works for this beer, even if it isn’t as roasty as a dunkel should be.
------- Winterfest 2009. I like this even more. Lots of grain flavor with lager yeast. Full, thick palate, lots of malt and roasted character with a hint of smoke. Like something out of the Czech Republic. BDR (2535) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - OCT 31, 2007
ABR 2007. Dark brown body with no head. Roasted malts on the nose and similar taste. A little ight on the finish. maniac (3800) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JUN 1, 2009
On tap at the brewpub on 05/31/2009. Clear dark brown body with ruby highlights and a creamy tan head. Sweet roast and chocolate aroma. Roast, chocolate and mild bitter flavor. Light body with moderate carbonation. Nearly a porter really.

Served at Winterfest in St. Paul, MN on Feb. 8, though wasn't listed in the program, and was therefore likely a late add. Good Bavarian Dunkel aroma. Black cherry colors. Good dunkel. Better than some in Munich; comparable to the Dunkel at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich...and I liked that. Malty. Quite good. Skyview (6099) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - DEC 28, 2007
Sampled at ABR 07 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pours a semi-hazy dark brown brew with a fast dissolving off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and white ring. Aroma of roasted multi-grain malt, some flowery hops and a touch of vanilla. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonated with flavors of dark roasted caramel malt, some flowery hops, some mild fruit character and a touch of vanilla. Finish is light, semi-dry with a multigrain malt aftertaste. Probably the best sampling from Herkimer at the ABR. pj1855 (160) - Eagan, Minnesota, USA - JAN 30, 2009
On Tap. Dark brown color with pretty small head. Decent lacing. Sweet malty aroma. Rather sweet beer overall. Flavor is sweet malt and chocolate some roasted nut. Little bit of hops in the finish. Pretty decent dunkel. Service at the bar could be a little better though. Nuffield (4195) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - DEC 29, 2003
Vanilla, nutty, caramel aroma. Red-chestnut color with good lacing. Bubbly but restrained and somewhat smooth. Hints of roastiness. Like their doppelbock but lacking the alcoholic notes. The best of their beers that I tried. muzzlehatch (4969) - Beloit, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 6, 2007
Draught pint at the brewpub, RBSG weekend, June 22 2007. Clear walnut with a nice dollop of off-white creamy head and excellent ring lacing....chocolate malts strong in the aroma, hints of caramel, faint grassy hops...fresh, dry mouthfeel, burnt and toasty grassy/grainy character, light chocolate and vanilla notes, smooth and satisfying medium-dry short finish. Pretty solid example of a style I haven’t really gotten into.
