Scotch Ale, or a Wee Heavy. At 9% alcohol, this big, brown brew is surely to warm you under that kilt. Malty, and much more than a wee delicious.

On tap at Artistic Table in Livermore. It pours a dark amber color with a khaki head. The aroma is subtly malty with dark red fruit, plum and raisin bread. The flavor is very sweet and caramelly with more raisin, fig newton and a little candied fruit. It has a sweet bready, fruity finish. Oddly satisfying for me. I was surprised I liked this one as much as I did.

brokensail (16449) - Dublin, California, USA - DEC 30, 2014
On tap @ Hermitage. Clear amber/brownish pour with a khaki head. Pretty sweet and malty. A lot of toasted malts, nuts, and bread. Kind of floral. A decent enough malt profile. Could use some more fruit character. The flavor is kind of on the bitter and astringent side. A lot of bread and toasted grain. Kind of husky and peppery. A bit of raisin and grape skin. Maybe on the earthy side as well. Weird acidity on the finish.

ajnepple (6625) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 27, 2014
12 oz bottle from Total Wine & More - Gilbert, AZ. Brown clear appearance with a fully dissipating head. Mild malty aroma with notes of butterscotch, caramel and toffee. Similar flavor, medium malty sweetness with a light earthy hop bitterness and a touch of smoke. Medium body, smooth and creamy feel with light carbonation.

islay (2765) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - OCT 12, 2014
Approximately half of a 12 oz. bottle, consumed on 10-11-14 (I used the remainder for cooking). Pours a clear, dark copper with a moderate amount of effervescence and a small to moderate amount of beige head. Sweet, malty aroma features scents of raisin, apricot, plum, caramel, and purple grape juice. Too sweet and fruity in smell to be ideal. Flavors of chocolate and chocolate with cherries. Excessively malty with way too little in the way of hops. Milky and unpleasant taste. Well subpar flavor for craft beer, so much so that I couldn’t finish the beer (and, as I wrote earlier, used the rest for cooking). Medium body, lighter than the ABV would suggest. Utterly forgettable palate effects. I’m not a fan; this is not my kind of beer. I understand that the name warns me of the maltiness, but, regardless, this beer does not taste good.

Thisis12ptfont (1195) - Los Angeles, CA, California, USA - SEP 4, 2014
Faint aromas of barley, grain malt, brown sugar and smoke. Appears a ruby black/brown with a thin foam rim. Taste is raisins, plums, figs, smokey malts and syrupy barley malts. Overall, slightly watery yet nice malt profile.

Dogbrick (13026) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - AUG 11, 2014
Sample at Tied House. Dark brown color with a medium tan head that dissipates quickly to a film. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roast malt and dark fruit. Medium to full body with flavors of peaty malt, fruit and caramel. The finish is sweet with a toffee and malt aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Bif (2245) - St. Charles, Missouri, USA - APR 3, 2014
On tap. Served a dark copper clor with a tan head that fades to some lacing. Aroma of malt, caramel, butterscotch and bit of spice. Taste of butterscotch and caramel with some malt . Mild bitterness and a bit of a syrupy finish. Medium body, smooth with no hint of the 9% ABV. decent beer for the style but expected a bit more.

2.6
BOSSbrewer (2705) - Arkansas, USA - MAR 20, 2014
Pours amber brown with a foamy off white head. Aroma is very malty with lots of molasses. Flavor is syrupy sweet with molasses and brown sugar. Thick bodied and heavy. Decent beer.

2.5
Lubiere (13915) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 29, 2013
A reddish copper ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet intense butterscotch with burned caramel and solvent notes, fake raisins, weird. In mouth, a sweet cloying fruity caramel malt with loads of chemical berry extract, astringent notes, raspy and unpleasant. On tap at Angel’s Trumpet.
