UPDATED: APR 16, 2010 Cask conditioned - handpump - JDW Northampton. A black coloured beer with a pleasant tan coloured head. The aroma is very full and welcoming. Treacle, malt, chocolate, sweet lactic characteristics. The taste is similar but with the addition of liquorice. A tasty chewy beer. Well brewed and lovely. [Gravity cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading] Black with ruby hints, no head. Sweet chocolate, camp coffee and a bit of treacle causes it to be rather sweet up front. However, it’s saved by roasted malt coming through in the surprisingly dry finish. It’s rather nice actually. Gary (1999) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 4, 2010
Herold Black Lager is a real drink , the best Schwarzbier in the world imo. Had this cask at a JDWS and it was cool and more interesting than most in their festival. Roasted chocolate and burnt raisin profile , with a little motor oil in the finish . Swillable ,tasty Schwarz. DJMonarch (9179) - Northwich, Cheshire, ENGLAND - MAY 21, 2010

Fruit and roast aromas. Beige head. Dark red coloured a little rich on the palate and fruity with a creamy dry and slightly bitter roast finish.

Hand pulled cask at the Moon and Sixpence (JDW) Hatch End. Almost black with a creamy tan head. Dry roast coffee and chocolate with a little caramel and peppery Saaz hops. Interesting to try this cask conditioned. madmitch76 (25009) - , Essex, ENGLAND - JUN 26, 2010
14th April 2010. Clear dark red brown beer. Smooth semi dry palate. Nicely joined up beer. Smooth dark malt. Pretty fruity - cherry, orange, tangy. Some subtle dark chocolate underneath. Dry finish. Tasty and very drinkable. greenclansman (935) - Nicosia, CYPRUS - MAY 10, 2012
Black color with reddish lights.
Thin body, watery texture.
Nice roasted aromas. Roasted malts on taste as well.
Easy going but pleasant beer. harrisoni (18820) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - OCT 30, 2006
UPDATED: FEB 4, 2008 Cask handpull at County Hotel JDW Ashford and Thomas Ingoldsby JDW Canterbury.
Black colour with ruby edges. Bubbly tan head. The Ashford sample had too much butter on the aroma for me. Sourish in mouth, but the dominated by butter/caramel. Faint dark malts make their way through, but I wasn’t keen. The Canterbury sample was similar but a little less butter/caramel. Still not something I would want again.1.5/5.0
Re-rate County Hotel, Ashford. So much better. Decent black stout, more like a dunkel really.
