Hertog Jan Grand Prestige Vatgerijpt - Goose Island

RATINGS: 30   MEAN: 3.95/5.0   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.83/5   IBU: 23   EST. CALORIES: 339   ABV: 11.3%
Grand Prestige is a classic recipe from our friends at Hertog Jan in the Netherlands. We brewed this beer to their specifications here in Chicago, but we added a new depth to the flavor by barrel aging it in a combination of first and second use bourbon barrels. Two different labels exist: a Goose Island Grand Prestige for the US and a Hertog Jan Vatgerijpt series for Europe.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2018 Bottle at home, no.2044. Dark brown, beige foamy head. Great sweet caramel, dried fruity, bourbon, vanilla nose. Taste lacks a bit of body, but is a nicely complex quadrupel, sweet figs, boozy bourbon, light peat. Aftertaste lingers okay. Low-medium carbonation.

75cl bottle split with Richardvv and SimonBlok. Poirs a hazy mahogany colour with a big creamy beige head which leaves a fair amount of lacing. Aroma of dark malt, roasted malt, candy sugar, vanila, apple oak, slight bourbon, wheat, caramel, cacao. Taste is medium sweet, moderate bitter with a moderate dry finish. Notes of caramel, candy sugar, dark malt, roasted malt, apple, bourbon, oak, soaked wood, cacao, maple syrup. Texture is sticky to oily, full bodied with moderate carbonation

75cl bottle at Gyhallmanti’s NYE Tasting, thanks to Gyhallmanti. Appearance: dark brown with medium, beige head. Aroma: bourbon, chocolate, soysauce, chocotoff, caramel. Taste: high sweetness and medium bitterness. Notes of chocolate, bourbon, caramel, chocotoff, cacao, butterscotch. Palate: medium bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. Very good stuff. Definitely noticable difference in influence of the barrel on the beer. Much more chocolate character in this one. Love it!

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2017 Gedronken met Quinten en Simon. Heerlijk bier, goed in balans met fijne lichtzoete smaak van snoepjes. Nasmaak is iets grassig, maar dat is ook het enige minpuntje.

0,7l bottle shared. Apperance: A Nice amber brown body, with an average sized beige head. Aroma: malts, dark malts, dark fruit, vanilla, bourbon, wood, a bit sweet, Taste: sweet dark fruity and malts up front, vanilla,a bit of wood, a hint of some charred wood tones, bourbon tones, alcohol (providing warmth) and a hint of licorice tones (probably from the stout) . . medium body and soft carbonation. Nice one better as expected the vanilla and woord tones go quite well with grandpresitge it seems.

From notes. Enjoyed at FoBAB 2017 (3rd session) in Chicago on November 11. The pour is a dark ruby-tinted brown color with a thick ring of light tan head and a couple spots of lace as it falls to a collar. The aroma is pretty solid. There is a nice dark fruit heaviness about it and a really sweet malt that opens up. There is a light charred oak and a hint of bourbon on the back end as it warms. The flavor is a little better. The dark fruits and a light caramel work well together and receive the alcohol well. There is a light vanilla that comes through late in addition to the maltiness and a hint of a soft yeast. It’s pretty good. The mouth feel is medium bodied and softly carbonated with a lingeringly heavy dark fruit and bourbon malt finish. I like this a little more than I thought I would. 7 4 8 4 15

I had this beer in Amsterdam at a bar called Beer Temple in late September 2017.

BeerViking (5132) - Brentford, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 23, 2017
Bottle at the Goose Island Blocktoberfest in London, dark mahogany with a white crema, the usual Bourbon vanilla and musty wood nose, lighter on the palate than BCBS, touches of grain and then a warm nutty alcohol bite, ending in a liquorice bitter finish.

Inoven (1041) - Oirschot, NETHERLANDS - JUN 27, 2017
Fles gedeeld door TomHendriksen en gedronken met Benzai en Roelzie. Roodbruin helder bier met weinig schuim. Aroma is rokerig, houtig en caramelachtig. Smaak is zoet, fruitig en houtig. Nasmaak is iets hoppig.

Benzai (16923) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - JUN 27, 2017
Bottle @ tasting shared by TomHendriksen. Nice amber brown color, average sized beige head. Aroma is malts, dark malts, slight vanilla, sweetness, bourbon. Taste malts, dark malts, vanilla, bourbon, some hints of bourbon county stout indeed? I thought I got a clear touch of it. Quite nice anyway. Well done.
