Do you remember the Dilemma of Arcen? We experimented on the brewery with different types of hops and malt until we could select two wonderful beers. Beer lovers then were allowed to choose their favorite. That was not easy yet. Eventually won was the beautiful dark beer. That we now know as Hertog Jan Karakter, which is still very popular. Rightly. A beautiful amber beer takes its fruity and malty flavor especially to our Hertog Jan prestige malt. An exquisite selection of four different malts! In essence, Hertog Jan Karakter is a Belgian Ale, a Belgian variant of the originally English Ale. Of course we gave then to our own Dutch twist. Ingredients: water, barley malt, wheat starch, sugar, hops.

30cl bottle at home. Appearance: brown with medium, off-white head. Aroma: Artificial banana, caramel, fruit esters and some raw potatoes. Taste: high sweetness and medium bitterness. Notes of banana, apricot, caramel and yeast. Palate: medium bodied, watery to oily texture and lively carbonation. A bit on the sweet side but still pretty decent

Ik vind deze heerlijk voor ’s middags, niet te zwaar lekker pittig en toch makkelijk drinkend biertje. caramel, gemiddeld bitter en zoet.

Butelka 0,33l pite w domu.Kolor jasnobursztynowy, klarowny, piana biała niezbyt mocna. Aromat karmelowy, lekko chlebowy niezbyt intensywny. Smak słodki, karmelowy, trochę trawiasty alkohol dobrze ukryty. Niezbyt intensywny aromat i smak, trochę nijakie. Brakuje owoców cytrusowych ale to ciemne piwo.

Ambersmaak met caramelsmaak. Donkere schuimkraag met een hoger alcoholpercentage dan ik ervaar.

30cl bottle at home from local supermarket. Maarssen. Nose is dried fruits. Body is clear deep amber, head is small, beige, creamy, mostly diminishing, good lacing. Aroma is dried fruits, honey, caramel, floral, sugar. Medium to heavy sweet, light bitter, medium fruity sour. Finish is medium lasting fruity medium sweet, light fruity sour, slightly acidic chemical, medium alcohol warmth. Medium to full body, slick texture, nearly flat carbonation. Quite easy dessertish beer, too much added sugar, too much alcohol in the flavor fo ABV 7.5%, drinkable though.

500ml can bought at Prize Mart in Shek Wu Hui, Sheung Shui.

Clear amber brown colour; Half finger head with soapy off-white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing with active small carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of amber malt, with strong banana, vanilla, caramel, bubblegum, brown sugar, light alcohol, light mustiness, bread, Bel yeast, very light phenolic, thin lemon and strawy grass; Close to light sweet taste of fair amber malt, with strong wheaty tartness, fair caramel, light red fruits, light brown sugar, light alcohol, spices, dry biscuits, lemon, medium bitter hops and grass; Medium body, slick and quite creamy palate; Mouth Feel is fair Amber maltyness in a smooth background. Strong presence wheaty tartness not balanced by very light brown sugar sweetness. Other tastes are also hollow with light caramel and light red fruits. Spicy and dry biscuity. Not much Bel yeastiness but has strong lemon to round. So so… Hoppiness is thin lemon and strawy grass in nose, same in taste but stronger; Bitterness is quite strong than for a lasting, mid to high astringent biscuit malt finish; Dry after taste. Tart and bitter to mouth.

Comments: Character is what this Belgian Amber is sorely lacking – the fruity banana aroma quite promising, but the taste is empty, lacking sweetness, fruity ester and yeastiness to be a big strong brew, just kinda like a tasteless ESA with Bel yeast got filtered. Pass.

Donker ambergeel, helder, crème kleurige schuimkraag. Aroma: Karamel, zoete mouten, zoethout, iets kruiden. Smaak: Zoete karamel mouten, hint van Belgische gist, banaan, rietsuiker/siroop, kruidige hops geven een licht kruidige bitter. Body is medium, weinig koolzuur, afdronk is bitterzoet karamel en iets droog. Mwoah!

Flesje gekregen van Heidie. Amberkleurig, helder bier met matig schuim. Aroma van drop en zoethout. Smaak is een beetje bitter en een beetje zoet. Hoppige bitterheid en kruiden blijven even hangen.

Rubin77 (2044) - Brussels / Bratislava, SLOVAK REPUBLIC - JUL 24, 2016
F: big, off-white, good retention. C: dark amber, red tones against the light, clear. A: malty, nutty, caramel, toast, hint of alcohol. T: malty, nutty, toast, light grassy bitterness, some fruity tones, chocolate, dark bread, cherries, medium to full body, normal carbonation, not bad at all, 500ml can from Spar in Westkapelle in Netherland.
