Dark yellow/golden and clear. Has a medium lasting, white head. Flavor and aroma has a little bit of bitterness, no floral notes. Flavor is mainly sweet. BlackHaddock (7690) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - MAY 10, 2012
Jan 2008: 30cl Brown bottle, the first of three Hertog Jan beers I intend reviewing today, my Dutch Beer Afternoon.
Poured into a Corsendonk tulip glass.
Old gold with a good white head, it looks like a tough lager. The bottle claims it to be an ’Extra Pilsner’. It is very clear and does appear a clean, tidy lager/pils. The head soon goes, just like most lagers.
No aroma apart from the normal yeasty, beery smell pilsners give off, it gets my regular lager 3 for a score.
It tastes like a lager beer with extra alcohol thrown in, there is not much more to say on the matter.
There is some body to the beer and it does hang about in the mouth, but it just doesn’t float my boat.
Nothing wrong with this beer, but there is something not right, it may be too much alcohol, or it may be the hops used, I can’t put my finger on it.

Bottle at home. Clear dark golden colour, white head. Aroma of corn and dough or bread. Flavour is slightly sweet, fruity, with a hint of bitterness in the end. Very soft mouthfeel, low carbonation. This one goes by unnoticed. caesar (7283) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - JUN 22, 2001

A little darker than a regular Pilsener this slightly stronger version has a strong full taste. It’s a bit low on the hops compared to the malt but offers enough flavour overall to make it interesting. There’s an aftertaste which is both metallic and a little grassy.

330 ml bottle. Dark golden body with a small off-white head. Aroma is vague grainy with hints of hops. Flavor is sweet malty, some caramel and alcohol with a pronounced bitter finish. Quite straightforward a stronger pils, not particular balanced. Countbeer (6599) - Best of E-Town mit 2 Brauhausen, NETHERLANDS - AUG 5, 2011
White head on top of a clear yellow golden colored beer.
Smell sweet, malts, yeast, fruits some spices.
Taste fruity, sweet, yeast, malty, hops and spices.
Low to medium carbo, sparking mouthfeel, medium body and a light creamy/watery texture. DutchDrebus (6196) - Oirschot, NETHERLANDS - JUL 18, 2011
Slightly darker than a regular pilsener i believe. Smells like regular pils, but i also smell some whisky notes? Might be just me. Tastes like a strong pilsener, with a mouthfeel that’s slightly better then a regular pils. skortila (5987) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - SEP 3, 2002
Quite bitter, not much ofa head, bitter/hoppy aftertaste. Nice.............. altonbrownd (5897) - Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA - AUG 11, 2006
Bottle at home. Pale pilsener, bit sweet, strong. Okay. Not my favorite of the Hertogs.
