April 8th, 2017 - Black IPA’s were the rage a few years ago, and I was very sad to see the trend disappear. The malt bill clashes in fascinating ways with a hoppy profile, and that might have been why the trend ended itself. But I still see Black IPAs here and there on store shelves. Still, a tap sighting is rare these days, so I snapped at Hess’ Deceptio. Opal black and shining like lava glass on the glass, it is an imperious beer, orphic in its opacity, with a thin, stack of tan pearls for a head. The aroma is lightly grainy, but also pushes a slight smokiness. A second and third sniff reveal a light fruit cocktail sweetness; tangerine specifically makes an appearance. The flavor is stronger than the aroma, with a pronounced bitterness that peaks in the mid-taste, flexing those hop cones. Featuring what I enjoy in this style, the hops and grains clash in a curious fashion, and while it isn’t especially elegant, the core essential of the style is here. snoworsummer (5624) - baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAR 2, 2017

Bottle. Very dark brown color, thick tan head with good retention. Nice aroma of pine dipped in espresso. Taste has bitter chocolate, coffee, pine resin, nice balance. Very tasty. Ibrew2or3 (8607) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - NOV 5, 2015
22oz bomber (8.8%) pours with a dark brown to mahogany colored body that supports a full tall dark tan head. The aroma offers up thin dark roasted malts, spicy to earthy floral hops, a dash of citrus and then a pleasing milk chocolate note. The taste is similar with a hoppy blend of citrus, spicy onion like hops and floral hops floating around amid nice chocolate malts, some dark roasted malts and thin black patent burnt maltiness. It leaves behind a pleasant toasty toasty sensation with persistent hops. Nice CDA. fordest (2470) - Santee/San Diego, California, USA - SEP 17, 2015
Draft at the Santee Bluegrass Festival. 2nd of two black IPAs on the field today. The aromas and flavors were very subtle from what I expect from an IPA. They were hoppy and citrus, just a little understated I think. lusikka (7813) - Tampere, FINLAND - AUG 20, 2015
