Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an ’amber’ ale brewed with ’brio’. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years. Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery. The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers. This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

Piana obfita, średnio pęcherzykowa, szybko opada do firanki. Barwa ciemno złota, klarowna. W zapachu głównie nuty słodu pilzneńskiego i estrów w formie brzoskwiń, w tle zioła. Smak półsłodki, słodowo estrowy, owocowy, z niedużą, fenolową goryczką. Wysokie, musujące wysycenie, dość mdłe w odbiorze, z lekko rozgrzewającym alko.
Bardzo "koncernowy" przedstawiciel stylu, ciężki, słodowo drożdżowy i męczący...

UPDATED: APR 16, 2018 Bottle at bbd. Dark amber with a dense off-white head. Fruity, carrot juice, pears, belgian yeast, apples, caramel, light alcohol burn in nose after a while.

330ml bottle pours deep amber with foamy beige head. Aromas of stone fruit, caramel malts, yeast and spices. Tastes of toffee, marzipan, raisin, brown sugar, Belgian yeast and alcohol. High carbonation and silky mouthfeel go some way to bidding the 8% alc vol. Long mild bitter finish with a hint of residual fruit tartness. The lighter stone fruit characters and malty complexity put it right in between a belgian blonde and a heavier darker strong ale.

Pours hazy brown with a modest lingering off white head. Nose is much more strongly booze than anticipated with some dark fruits and caramel present as well. Flavor is less boozy but not particularly rich either with some Belgian notes dominating the palate. Finish is thin. Not bad but inferior to other beers from this brewer.

330ml bottle at home. Pours golden/amber with big white head. Tastes of caramel, malt, resin and alcohol. Reminds me of scotch ales like Douglas Celtic Brown. Very good.

Attractive looking deep copper beer, holds a dense offwhite head. Aromas of rich caramel/toffee, dates, dried figs, sultana, touch of spice. Good weight - slightly thick but not cloying, booze sort of thins out affairs without being overly warm, fair carbonation provides a creaminess. Reasonably sweet upfront - dates & sultanas again, brown sugar, brown toffee, extra notch of woody spice lingers with a moderate bitterness on finish, touch of booze. Pretty good Dubbel-style overall

Lekker biertje.

Zilverenmaan (360) - Antwerp, BELGIUM - JAN 26, 2018
Poors slightly hazy orange brown, big, dense, white head, thick lacing. Aroma and taste sweetish caramel, light hoppy finish, some yeast, not unlike a scotch ale. Rather good, not too sweet, no alcohol disturbance, noticable carbonation.
