Het Anker Brewery still brews "The Emperor’s Beer" which is top-fermented and bottle conditioned following traditional methods. Its high gravity (O.G. 1080-85) combines the warmth of wine and the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus is one of the strongest and most exciting beers in the world. After lengthy maturing and conditioning, it is bottled unfiltered, giving a beer which is rich in vitamins and 100% natural. Gouden Carolus has unlimited storage (it even improves with age) and will charm you with its warm coppery colour and rich bouquet.

Beautiful dark ruby color with a small off-white head. Very bready, spicy aroma, lots of banana as well. Taste is quite similar. Smooth, full palate. Quite reminiscent of the Rochefort 10.

Appearance: Pours clear deep coppery brown with creamy quickly-diminishing off-white head, with lacing. 4/5 Aroma: Moderate liquorice, vanilla and herbs, moderate to heavy sweet corn, malt, syrup, caramel and yeast, with subtle toasting notes. 8/10 Taste: Malt, syrup, candi sugar, caramel and some alcohol, with cherries and wheat notes. Quite sweet, slight bitter, also shown some sourness of wheat. Fruity malty caramelish and slight acidity finish, lingering. 6/10 Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied, a bit harsh and chalky, moderate carbonated. 3/5 Overall: Easy to drink, but too sweet to be balanced and the mouthfeel is unpleasant. 8/20

Very deep chestnut brown/red colour with medium thick off-white almost brown foam. Aromas sweet of ripe bananas, toffee, dried fruits such as raisins and plums with notes of biscuit and maybe a touch of scotch. Palate, medium/full body with smooth mouth coating texture leaving sweet, long finish. Taste, sweet of butterscotch, dried fruits and caramel. Overall, a fantastic brew really enjoyed it!

Bottle at L'estaminet, Bruges, 21/01/18. Mahogany brown with a well presented and lasting beige head. Nose is sweet caramel, stewed fruits, light spice, fruit cake, sugars. Taste comprises dark malts, brown sugar, fruit loaf, sticky toffee pudding, stewed fruits, caramelised figs, dates. Medium plus body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a warming kiss of alcohol. Solid for the style.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2018 Donker goudbruin kleur.

From bottle in Belgian ale glass. Pours murky dark brown with big bubbly tan head and malty aroma mixed with brown sugar and a bit of rubber(?). Rich, smooth malty taste that reminds me of a Christmas pudding
