COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Every year on the 24th of February, the birthday of "Charles the fifth", the Brewery brews the Gouden Carolus "Cuvee of the Emperor" in a limited quantity and with an eye on the highest quality and tradition.

This unique brewing, with only extra fine Belgian hops and with a higher alcohol level, guarantees a better evolution in the time, than the already known Gouden Carolus Classic.

The 75cl bottles are closed with a quality cork. Excellent to store several years. This exceptional ale ages well, developing a refined complexity and intense aromas. With powerful notes of roasted malts, caramel and plums, its surprisingly soft and fruity aroma combines a warm roundness with a refreshing taste. An imperial brew to cherish and enjoy in moderation.

Was 8% abv in 2000-2002, 10% in 2003 and 11% in 2004.

DISCLAIMER: This is a dark beer and the label has a blue diagonal line.

Fles 75cl 2016. Uitzicht: bruin met beige schuim. Neus: gedroogde pruimen, alcohol, karamel. Slaak: overdreven zoet, gedroogde pruimen, alcohol. Nasmaak: zoet blijft erg sterk aanhouden. Besluit: te zoet. Ik hoop dat het niet ligt aan het feit dat de fles al meer dan een jaar in ons wijnrek in de living ligt. Dan is deze recensie niet objectief.

Slightly dark aroma of raisin and plum....taste is the same...warming, and light alcohol burn...finishes with sweetness and a touch of burn...some complexity but the burn seems to be about half of the flavor...sweet now with time...better!

Bottle from the LCBO, 2012 vintage (been in the cellar for some time). Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights, big off white head. Aroma is very sweet caramel and toffee, with plum and some roasty notes. Taste is very sweet caramel and toffee, very ripe plums, brown sugar, some spiciness and a lingering vinous character in the aftertaste. A nice winter warmer. A bit too sweet for my tastes, but still quite good.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Shared with Anke. 2017 edition.
Pours hazy dark brown with a big, foamy, lasting, tan head. Intense aroma of raisin, plums, candied fruits, figs, yeast, caramel, (light roasted) malt, spices, liqueur and brown sugar. It tastes medium to heavy sweet with hints of licorice, dark fruits and syrup, then light hoppy and spicy bitter; sweetish and herbal finish, with warming (whisky or wine) alcohol. Full body, slick/syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. Complex and extremely tasty. A delight!

Appearance: Pours clear deep ruby brown with creamy quickly-diminishing off-white head, with lacing. 4/5 Aroma: Loads of vanilla and liquorice, with dark fruits (raisin, plum and date), malt, caramel and yeast notes. 7/10 Taste: Roasted malt, candi sugar, liquorice, caramel, syrup, dark fruits and dried fruits, with some alcohol kick. Quite sweet but not cloying, fairly fruity and yeasty as well, the bitterness is almost gone. Shown sweet malt, fruits, caramel and a bit alcohol toward the finish. 7/10 Mouthfeel: Rounded, rich, full bodied, carbonation is soft. 5/5 Overall: Not very complex but solid, palate is cognac-like and very easy to drink. This one is as much in sweetness as the rood lable, but not cloying, which is quite a problem for the latter. Rather drinkable. 16/20

W aromacie śliwka, ciemne owoce, przyprawy, kolendra, melanoidy.

Ma obožavam tu slatko-kiselkastu kombinaciju i alkoholnu aromu.

Pours dark brown cola with a small white wisp. Aroma is sweet caramel and raisins. Loads of purple fruit. Taste is a sharp alcohol sting then followed with loads of sweet caramel, raisins, fig and malt. A little too sweet for me. I used to live for this but I guess I have changed.

2011 bomber cracked for the new year, pours a medium to reddish brown caramel color, Nose is dark fruits, raisins and som fig jam, some malty sweetness, mouthfeel is intricate, yet smooth, port like qualities, goes down smooth with a nice warming sensation, highly enjoyable quad that lived up to many good years in the cellar...
