Draft sample at MBGSF ’10 from notes. Pours a clear dark cola brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, chocolate, earthy and herbal hops, citrus character that distracts for me, decent effort.

On tap at The Hideout Brewpub as Black-a-rillo, 6.8% ABV. Dark mahogany/brown with a moderate brown crown. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt and mild citrus. Taste of dark malts, chocolate, citrus, orange with a moderate bitter finish.

Hideout’s Black IPA is a full, chunky dark seasonal brown ale reminiscent of a very good, bitter porter. It opened with a hefty chocolate nose, big frontal flavor and a long, rolling hoppy bite before finishing with a dry bitterness. There’s plenty of legs and a full, rich blend of cinnamon, nuts, coffee, and chocolate before the herbal assault. While it opens up as it warms, it probably will fit the weather better this fall or winter. That said, my pint went down just fine on a 85° day, thank you, and reminded me of many early brewpub efforts ten, fifteen years ago ... and that’s a good thing. Serving type: on-tap

On tap at brewpub, pours a very dark brown almost black color with a frothy white head with lacing in the glass, has a nice citrus and floral aroma, the overall taste kind of disappointed me, has some nice notes of hops with a hint of roasted malt, not bad.

BBB63 (6557) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - AUG 14, 2010
MiBG Summer Fest 2010: Nearly opaque with a slight head and somewhat oily appearance. The aroma has notes of chocolate and charred malts, some roast, grassy and herbal hops and a touch of phenolic vapours. There was a good malt to hop balance but actually seems too restrained for it’s own good. Some dark fruit and smoky malt tones. Just wish it was a bit more hop forward. The mouth feel is the best part of this brew, very drinkable and even slightly chewy, minimal astrengent tone. Solid enough but left still wanting more.

Draft sample at MBGSF 10. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted and produced excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted sour citrus and floral aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a good beer.

On tap at MBGSF 2010. Pours dark brown to black with an off-white head. Has a moderate citrus and floral hoppy aroma. Flavor has citrus hops, with roasty malts building over time.
