$15.99 bomber from Olive Tree Market in OB a couple weeks ago. I hope this is a rendition of Old Inventory from Steve when he was at Valley Brewing. Clear ruby brown with a one finger beige head, swirly with decent retention. Caramel, toffee, toast and bourbon (the old delicious oxidized type, not a fresh boozy barrel) blend pretty well, as the latter two temper the sweetness of the first. Digging a bit deeper some dark ripe figs with a tinge of prunes comes forth with a bit of vanilla and cream. The flavor adds a slightly harsher booze presence, and even adding a little roast moving towards the finish. A bit boozy in the finish (doesn’t even try to hide its 10.5%), as the bourbon is becoming of the more fresh persuasion (maybe young is a better term, as opposed to my earlier statement on the aroma). The finish is bone dry with bitterness peaking at a 2-3, faint char showing up way way way late. Low carbonation with a full body. Still pretty good, but I’m glad I have one bottle for the cellar/base/ment/closet/windowsill(joke) to save for a year or so to see if this mellows. ngeunit1 (1555) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 1, 2012
A - Pours a dark brown color with a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some light lace.
S - Aroma is full of rich sweet caramel malts, with some brown sugar, vanilla, oak, dark fruit, licorice, and just a hint of booze.
T - Starts off with some rich sweet caramel malts with some dark fruit, brown sugar, vanilla, and a bit of black licorice. Through the middle, some oak comes through alongside some stronger dark fruits and a bit of molasses. The finish is a mix of sweet caramelized malts, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, dark fruit, and a bit of booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a syrupy, warming, and sweet finish.
D - Very drinkable. Really nice malty English barleywine. The sweet caramelized flavor balance really nicely with the barrel flavors. bb (9268) - Alamo, California, USA - MAR 23, 2012
Bottle. Dark brown beer with a tan head. Chocolate and toffee aroma with backing hops and light vanilla. Malt and toffee flavor with light darker malts and vanilla. Medium bodied. Aroma: Smokey. Tobacco, rough leather. Fig and raisin. Stiff dark chocolate.
Appearance: Dark leathery brown. Complete opacity. Nice thin khaki head.
Taste: Malty, coffee. Licorice and anise. Banana bread. The alcohol is well concealed.
Palate: Stiff and chewy. Leather. Nice full flavored barleywine. Balance is nice. Not exceptionally sweet.
Overall: A great after dinner barleywine. Mature. This should age marvelously.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours very dark brown with a 2 finger creamy beige/tan head. Aroma is mostly brown sugar. Full bodied. Flavor is treacle with suggestions of chocolate. Or coffee. Or something. There’s no direct heat, but my nose knows there’s alcohol here. Nice in that it’s not the sickly brown sugar many barleywines seem to be. It’s not dry, but it’s not excessively sweet, and it’s just lightly astringent. With a little time it develops cherry pit flavor. Thinking this is good stuff. Landmonger (155) - USA - MAR 16, 2012
Poured out of a 22 oz bottle into a trappist glass (or is it a chalice???) Dark in appearance with the crimson showing depnding on how much light you have, it pours with little head which dissapates to just the edges with a slight trace across the top. Aroma is caramel, smoky and as advertised something appealing as a slow sipping beer by the fireplace. Taste also is abundantly of caramel, roasty. On tap at burger. in Santa Cruz. Pours opaque dark brown with crimson corners. Pruney iodine aroma with some evident booze, maybe a little raisin. Not the best aroma, nor is it very robust. Flavor is much better. Earthy chocolate with burnt brown sugar, a touch of soy, and a buttery toasted coconut finish. Not sure if this is bourbon barrel aged but it sure seems like it. Taster at DBS. Aroma was of bourbon and bittering hops. Flavor is bourbon, bitter hop, toffee, and caramel. I liked this taster better here than at Beer Rev. Very good beer.

On tap. Pours with a lightly murky, deep brown hued body with a receding tan hued head. Any attempt at lace is batted down by alcohol legs. Aromas are of bourbon, molasses, marzipan, brown sugar, vanillin, barrel, dates, oak, leather and mild oxidation. The bourbon character is a bit on the brash side of things (bourbon quality wise). Kola and kirsch. Flavors are of leather, brown sugar, toffee, chewy, caramel, bitter. Lots of oak tannin and vanilla. Medium alcohol warmth, low carbonation with lots of bitter tannins in the finish.
