COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pasteurised bottle.
A firm favourite with the customers who have fond memories of the days when this beer would be “mulled” using a red hot poker, to enhance it’s aroma. It is brewed using pale, crystal and black malts with a little high maltose syrup. The beer’s natural sweetness is balanced using Progress, Fuggle and Golding hops.
Tasting notes: A warming aroma with hints of chocolate, fruit and malt gives way to a complex full palate of chocolate, fruit and liquorice. The finish is long and the overall impression is of a superbly crafted, smooth and well-balanced beer, which many will testify is deceptively strong.

Bottle, from Sainsbury’s, Kidlington, Oxon, 20-08-08 Pours dark brown with tan head. Big on chocolate both in mouth and on nose. Lacks in bitterness, instead quite creamy cocoa smooth and easy drinking.

500 ml bottle. Deep brown color, ruby highlights, tan head. High carbonation, syrupy mouthfeel. Flavor is very similar to Old Ember, with pronounced bitterness. Didn’t like this one much either.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Broadstairs: Poured a very dark brown, almost black. Sweet with lots of raisin and other fruit flavours. Also slight sourness as you’d expect in an old ale. Could do with a little more body but rather good nonetheless.

Bottled, thanks oh6gdx! Very dark brown, creamy head. Aroma of apples and molasses. Sweet and fruity with medium body. It’s sloppy and empty with some edgy metal and not nmuvh else. Poor.

ante (3373) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - MAY 8, 2008
Bottled, thanks omhper! Pours out in a clear reddish brown colour with a low creamy tan-coloured foam. Inviting deep malty aroma of raisins, figs, salt and tobacco. Medium-bodied with notes of crackers, prunes, fudge, sweet licorice and nuts. Smooth mouthfeel. Salt, prunes, raisins and soily hops in a well-balanced finish.

TET (3031) - Kaarina, FINLAND - APR 19, 2008
Highgate Old Ale is very dark brown beer with medium beige head. In the aroma there is something weird, familiar things are sweetness and slightly roastines. Flavour is slightly roasted, and sour and it changes quite dry in the end. Quite nice to drink: carbonation is nice balanced and instead of quite low alcohol level body is still strong enough. Highgate Old Ale’s aroma and flavour is different but I don’t get it what is the final aim for this beer.

Bov (12636) - Bienne, SWITZERLAND - APR 16, 2008
courtesy of oh6gdx - pours a dark ruby-brown colour under a dark beige head; solid biscuity maltiness with notes of nuts and plums; medium-bodied, sweet with a touch of sourness; toasty; long malty, slightly nutty aftertaste - good and subtle
