Pours a very dark brown, almost black, made me think of pouring a glass of coke. Has a thin tan head with plenty of carbonation. Aroma was pleasant but strong of licorice and coco. Taste was equally pleasant, with touches of licorice, chocolate, and brown sugar. starts off a tiny bit bitter finishes dry. ChainGangGuy (4941) - Woodstock, Georgia, USA - FEB 16, 2014

Appearance: Very dark brown body, a little amber at its edges, with a slim, albeit slowly receding, ivory-hued head.
Smell: Mildly fragrant nose, but, you do gets your wanted notes of roast, chocolate, caramel, fruit, as well as the oak and vanilla from the bourbon.
Taste: Splash of cola, slight milk chocolate, very sparse roastiness. A light dark fruitiness. Highland delivers a gentle bourbon character, it’s not overpowering, nor is it lacking, it’s just enough to brighten up the standard slight flavors. Closes out with a surprising zing of crispness.
Mouthfeel: Just under medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.
Overall: I was not a huge fan of the original HOP, and, I’ll admit, I was concerned the barrel-aging could even be a hindrance,
On draft but this was the bourbon barrel aged. Barrels from wildfire reserve. Black pour strong on the bourbon but the roastiness of the malt and the coffee undertones and bits of chocolate was awesome it’s ashame they blew the keg would have liked more.
this was rated originally 1/23/12 at the highland brewing facility. Travlr (26405) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - MAR 5, 2013
