"Lordy, that’s as red as the devil’s britches," exclaimed a local rancher, awed by the vibrant canopy ablaze on what is known today as Devil’s Britches trail. Highland Brewing Company commemorates the history of the Great Smoky Mountains and Devil’s Britches trail with a rich, red IPA. Ashburne Mild malt produces a toasted and biscuity flavor, and Extra Special malt renders an alluring red hue. Apollo hops provide aggressive bitterness(70 IBU), while dry-hopping with Calypso hops yields complex fruity and floral aromas with hints of pear and apple. This devilishly delicious ale is Highland’s twist on the great American IPA.

A weird IPA. Pours dark red. Smells hoppy, but has strong malt flavors. Some pine and slight citrus notes. Hefty hops. Interesting beer.

Gaelic meets Kashmir. Doesn’t like each other. Amber meshed with IPA and combo results are not as good as each individually. Not a drain pour but an experiement, while not a failure, not a success either

Pours darker than an IPA. Very dry, with some hops. Bitter finish. Different in terms of an IPA. Hop bitterness is there but there’s very little else there. Meh.

Amber with an off white head. Aroma is pine hops with some toasted malt. Flavor is toasted malt, a little nutty with strong piney hops. A little bit resinous with a bitter finish. Wife: 3.75

Bottle from southport. Dark amber, modest frothy head, some lacing, enough hops and a good amount of malt, a tad harsh but all in all quite good.

Draft. Earthy over-ripe orange malt and orange peel aroma. Amber with moderate head. Sweet light orange malt and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Nice.

Pours clear red amber with a soapy yellow-white head that laces decently. Aroma is tropical citrus fruit and toasted malt. Taste leads with mandarin orange citrus and notes of lime and bridges into some resiny pine hop. It all rests on a bed of caramel malt that concludes with some nice roasted flavors. Aftertaste is a mix of citrus and bitter hops. Moderately carbonated. This is a damn good IPA that I think is being under-rated. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

@ Jungle Jims / Eastgate OH --- Clear mahogany with a splotchy head cover and dripping bands of lace. Taste reminds me of listening to AM radio 40 years ago and barely hearing a distant station behind one that was much closer. That would be malt : hops here. Malt may be present, but it takes effort to uncover it. A treat for hopheads, but not enough balance to work for me. Kudos for a lot of flavor in a 6%er.

12 oz. bottle poured into shaker. Beautiful reddish copper color with a finger of light tan head that leaves some nice lacing. Grassy hop and earthy roasted malt aroma. Flavor is slight caramel sweetness and biscuit with a long bitter hop finish. I’m a sucker for a nice red, so I enjoyed this.
